Zagreb's octogon

Nestled within the former First Croatian Savings Bank building connecting Petrinjska Street and Ban Jelačić Square, Zagreb’s iconic Oktogon passage reveals a masterpiece of turn-of-the-century Central European architecture.

Designed between 1898 and 1800 by the renowned Austro-Hungarian architect Hermann Bollé, this urban arcaded passage epitomizes Historicist design infused with intricate Art Nouveau decorative sensibilities.

At the heart of the covered walkway, a towering octagonal central atrium rises toward an exquisite stained-glass skylight, casting vibrant geometry and softly diffused natural light across the interior gallery below.

Constructed following the devastating 1880 Zagreb earthquake as part of a modernizing effort for Lower Town (Donji Grad), the arcade stands as a monument to the city's fin-de-siècle economic prosperity and refined urban planning.

The octagonal glass dome features radial iron ribs lined with floral motif stained-glass borders, capturing the delicate elegance of European passage architecture that bridged the gap between historic craftsmanship and modern engineering. Kallina house:
Art Nouveau at its finest

Standing proudly at the corner of Masarykova and Gundulićeva streets in Zagreb, the Kallina House represents one of the finest surviving masterpieces of Croatian Art Nouveau.
Designed in 1903 by the renowned architect Vjekoslav Bastl, a pupil of Otto Wagner's influential Vienna Secession school, the residential building was commissioned by industrialist Josip Kallina.
The facade serves as a brilliant promotional showcase for Kallina's ceramic factory, clad almost entirely in polychrome glazed ceramic tiles that have remarkably preserved their vibrant hues over a century later.
Intricate floral motifs and soft pastel shades of cyan, cream, and ochre trace the upper floors, culminating in a striking top-floor frieze adorned with stylized bats.
Elegant curved wrought-iron balconies sweep across the rounded corner bay, anchoring the structure's dynamic, organic geometry against the clear blue sky. Kallina house:
