Yan Gurasa: Women, Heat, and Survival in Northern Nigeria

At the premiere of Yan Gurasa, a short documentary on women gurasa bakers in Kano, climate experts, gender advocates, and policymakers gathered to confront an urgent reality: rising heat is not just an environmental crisis, it’s a livelihood crisis.

The 15-minute film, part of the Muryarta Araya Muhalli project, captures the resilience of women working in searing conditions where health, income, and survival collide. From the smoke-filled bakeries of Kano to the roundtables of climate dialogue, Yan Gurasa sheds light on how women bear the brunt of heat stress, and what can be done to change their story.

It’s more than a documentary, it’s a call to action for cleaner energy, workplace protections, and policies that safeguard women at the frontlines of climate change. #climatechange #yangurasa #climateaction #s24impact #fyp #nigerians #nigerianews #s24 change

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending an inspiring and engaging Story Lab with S24, hosted by Ms. Haleemah Abdullahi, the amazing founder of Connect the Dots, alongside Mr. John Coster, a seasoned media expert.
The session was not only full of rich learning, it was also so much fun! John had us laughing a lot, and one thing he shared really stuck with me: according to him, LAB stands for Learn, Access, and Build.
He explained that for any story to truly connect, it must involve people, places, and events. He also emphasized how important it is to connect your story across different levels; local, national, regional, and even international.
There was also a fascinating discussion about the role of AI in storytelling. Ms. Haleemah pointed out that you can use AI to assist in your work and still keep your originality. However, whether it makes you more productive or lazy really depends on the individual.
And then came the funniest yet most thought-provoking question of the day:
“What if AI becomes self aware?” 😳😌
Think about that...

When floods hit, women and children pay the highest price.
From disease to dangerous delays in care, the impact is real, and it’s deadly.

We need urgent action:
✅ Healthcare where it’s needed most
✅ Emergency plans that protect women and kids
✅ Strong, climate-smart infrastructure

Protect women’s health. Protect our future.
