Three villages near the protected Manombo forest in Madagascar now have 2000L water tanks to collect clean rainwater!  Community members in Sahamahitsy, Namahora, and Karimbelo highlighted that each of their villages were at risk of drinking contaminated water, and suggested rainwater collection as a solution to this health challenge. Check out the video for a behind the scenes look at how, with the support of HIH, this community-designed solution was implemented and safe drinking water became accessible in each of these villages.  #CommunityDesign #CommunitySolutions #RainwaterHarvesting #ClimateAction #Manombo

60 new rainwater harvesting systems completed in Manombo Commune! In summer 2023, @dukeplanetlab uncovered high levels of bacterial contamination in village drinking water in South Eastern Madagascar. Radical listening was carried out with the communities, and now 60 household rainwater catchment tanks have been built across 3 villages —bringing clean, safe drinking water to communities! This project was a collaboration between @_improper, @tatirano.madagascar, @zarasoa.madagascar & @dukeplanetlab 🌍💙 We can’t wait to monitor how these systems are used & track their impact. #CleanWaterForAll #RainwaterHarvesting #CommunityLedSolutions

In the summer of 2023, members from Duke University’s PlanetLab tested the drinking water sources in a series of villages in Southeastern Madagascar. The results indicated alarmingly high levels of bacterial contamination. To address this problem, we helped facilitate a project between Health In Harmony, Tatirano, Zarasoa, and the PlanetLab to construct rainwater catchment tanks to provide clean, safe drinking water for the people in these villages.

This week @zarasoa.madagascar had the pleasure of working with Raherinirainy Tojosoa, a renowned videographer and photographer from Madagascar, to capture some of the color and beauty of the communities that Zarasoa works with throughout the Alakamisy Ambohimaha commune. ⛰️🌄 As a team, we first discussed doing a mural concept that got kids excited about the water source and interacting with the project - then the team realized that the best way to do this was to allow the children to let their creativity lead the way. 🖼️ We are excited to share pictures and video that capture the participation of students in customizing their water tanks and taking agency in the care and ownership of their school water supply. 🎨🖌️ #madagascar #youth #art #community #waterproject #schoolart #mural

Tatirano has had the pleasure of partnering with @nytanintsika , @healthinharmonyngo , and @zarasoa.madagascar to host a training for builders and community members from Fianarantsoa and Farafangana. 🔨📚 The training has taken place over two weeks in the commune of Alakamisy Ambohimaha. There are 12 participants learning, studying, and getting hands-on application of the building of the Tatirano rainwater harvesting systems. The participants include builders from Ny Tanantsika who have spent many years building rainwater harvesters but "are excited and invigorated by the knowledge of an updated and new way to build a calabash". Tatirano sent three of our most seasoned builders, Emeligo (Construction Team Leader), Haingo (Assistant Construction Team Leader), and Delicia (Assistant Construction Team Leader) to train three different teams. Delicia notes to her team that it is not enough to run through the motions of building the system, you have to "do your work from the heart". Three schools in the area are benefitting from the training and will receive a 5,000 liter tank as a result to provide clean water for a total of over 2,000 students. The anticipated result of the training is an increased knowledge on rainwater harvesting systems in regions that extend outside of Tatirano's network so that more organizations can learn and adapt building techniques. These three systems will be critical to have before the rainy season hits in Fianarantsoa. Watching water being collected and stored in a rainwater harvester inspires communities to think of ways that they can work with the environment and meet their needs in a sustainable way. Thank you to the supporters, schools, parents associations, and builders involved in the project. It has been a success because of you! #cleanclassrooms #healthyschools #safewater #Cleanhands #hydrate #washinghands #learning #cleanwater #rainwaterharvesting #water #project #tatirano #madagascar #SDGs #sdg6cleanwaterandsanitationforall
