💜The Color Purple💜

It took me the longest time to get past that impressive introduction by the author. I kept reading and re reading the first 20 page intro about how the author thinks about God, Jesus and the relationship African Americans and generally Africans share with the "white people's" God. They were taken from their native land, shaved, stripped, humiliated and lashed at for praying to "their" gods and goddesses or worshipping nature. They got rechristened by "proper christian names", got a white washed identity, it broke their spirits and they were put to work under inhumane conditions. Initially they questioned this unfairness but eventually they submitted to their defeat cause their own people sold them as slaves to the white people. The whites pointed to the "good book" citing how the blacks are born to serve the whites and stay servitude.
But even in the times of adversity African Americans ran to the light cause it is their natural instinct "to survive" above anything else. So, they have their own relationship with God/Jesus.
Like Shug says she finds God in living and enjoying her life to the fullest while being able to appreciate everything God has created beautifully in this world to serve his vanity.

Writing Style: Walker's use of epistolary form, with Celie's letters as the primary narrative device, gives the novel a raw and intimate feel. Celie's voice, initially uneducated and limited, gradually evolves as she gains confidence and self-awareness.

Love and Sisterhood: The bond between Celie and her sister, Nettie, is a central theme, emphasizing the importance of female solidarity and support.

Sexuality and Identity: The novel explores themes of sexuality, gender, and self-discovery.

It's beginning to look a lot like... Autumn! 🍂🥮🍁

Autumn and Winter are by far my favourite seasons... Halloween, Christmas, movies/books by the fire, cosy jumpers, walks in the rain. For me, you literally can't beat it 😆

The bookstack shown are some of the books I would like to read over the next few months. I have started reading Iron Flame and The Maid, and so far so good!

🍆Aloo Bengan🍆& Dad (Birmingham 80’s😮)!!
Aubergine & Potato curry
Aloo Bathaoun - was what my Dad called this Punjabi dish. The very first thing he taught me how to cook when I was still at school! My children know them as Aloo Bengan and like them too! My dad loved this veg dish the most!
Over the years I have developed it slightly as it can be quite a boring vegetable for some! I always try to enhance its flavour so I can actually eat it rather than eating all the potatoes instead like I did as a child! Now I love the taste since I’ve been baking them in their skin. They are so much smoother in taste and texture this way. I chop the potatoes much bigger than we did back then and I also add tin tomatoes 🍅 which my dad did not. I leave it to slow cook in the onion & tomato base and it comes out better than my bhoona Lamb!!
The mustard seeds along with the ajwain and black seeds, fennel, Methi and tandoori masala take the flavours to another level 🍆🌿🍅🌶️🥔❤️
Yesterday it was the day I lost my Dad 22 years ago. Funny how I wrote this yesterday afternoon and had totally forgotten until the evening!! QOTD: Is there a series you can’t wait to start/continue?

I’m excited to see where Caraval takes me. I finished the first book a little while ago and I’m definitely interested in seeing what’s in store over the next two instalments!

It’s one of the first books I started to use tabs on and make annotations. I also annotated The Mercies and The Song of Achilles (not pictured). Do you tab or annotate? And do you use a system?

I was inspired by @zedslit and @girlinread_ to make a start. (@girlinread_ has some amazing reels and posts about her annotation + her customised tabs which I’d love to make use of one day)

It’s been so lovely to be able to flick back and find the quotes that I loved and wanted to save for later. I highlight all the time on my kindle so why not on my physical books!

I also love finding secondhand books that have been annotated, the older the better!!

If you don’t already tab/annotate, would you be tempted to do so, or is it an absolutel no-no? (There are now wrong answers!)
