I was an MRI tech before I became a doctor and the brain and spine were always my favorite images to acquire, so it’s no surprise neurology became one of my favorite blocks in med school. This sagittal brain sweatshirt from @codexanatomicus is a perfect reminder of that. They also make reproductive, cardiology, pulmonary and even dental designs, plus wall art, and lapel pins if you’re into that kind of beautifully nerdy detail. Go check them out and I will definitely be doing some more shopping on my own. Don’t say I didn’t do anything for you!

DPC Summit 2024, I sat in this room quietly wondering if I was brave enough to quit my job.
DPC Summit 2026, I came back one year into building my own practice, reconnecting with people who get it in a way most people in my life simply can’t.
Same room. Completely different woman.
If you’re sitting where I was two years ago on the edge of something, scared, talking yourself in and out of it, just letting you know the version of you on the other side of that leap is worth meeting.

The day I scanned that woman changed something in me fundamentally. She was the same age as me with the same number of kids as me. I did my job and sent her back into her life with a diagnosis that would change everything about it. And then she was gone back to her world. I never found out what happened next.

But I couldn’t stop wondering what would happen to her now? How would she be treated? Who would actually sit with her and explain it, not just deliver the news but walk her through what came after?
I realized I didn’t just want to capture the picture. I wanted to be in the room for everything that came after it. I don’t know what happened to her. I think about her more than she’ll ever know. But she’s part of the reason I went back to school, part of the reason I became Dr. Oni.

Sometimes the moment that changes your life isn’t even your own. It’s someone else’s and you just happen to be paying attention. Have you ever had a moment like that where someone else’s story quietly changed the direction of yours? Do share in the comments.

You know that moment when the line next to you starts moving faster and suddenly you’re questioning all your life choices?
So you switch and all of a sudden, the line you just left starts moving.
Life can feel like that too. Someone else’s career is moving faster. Their business is growing faster. Their opportunity came sooner. Their season looks like it’s finally taking off.
And suddenly, you want to abandon your lane.
But movement isn’t always progress, and waiting isn’t always stagnation.
Not every slow season requires a pivot and not every delay requires a reaction. And not every decision needs to be made because someone else appears to be getting ahead.
Sometimes the lesson is simply:

Stay in your lane. Don’t make permanent decisions from temporary impatience. Trust the process. Your line will move too.

I wanted to be a doctor from when I was 6 years old. But life happened and it seemed like that dream had been buried. Life took many twists and turns till the opportunity came around again. I went to med school as a 37 year old mum of 3 and started residency at 41, pregnant with another baby. All because the dream refused to die. Many thought I was crazy then. But life settled into a nice rhythm after graduation and kids off to college. When I started to feel a nudge to leave the traditional healthcare system and start my own practice, worse in a new city where nobody knew me, many thought I was even crazier. Why now? What about my age? What if no patients came? How would I pull this off? At 50 when many are thinking about FIRE and pulling away from working. But it was better for me to sit with the discomfort of starting over than to later live with the pain of regret. Now I’m 50 and today we did the formal ribbon cutting ceremony for my practice. I may sound like a broken record at this point, but I’m here offering myself up as a picture of possibilities. If this is you thinking about a pivot of some kind, starting something new but worried about taking too long, just because your dreams are taking time doesn’t mean they are not on the way.
