4 high altitude ⛰️ passes, 8,000’ of gain, 27 miles of epic scenery. Alpine lakes and meadows. One of the most beautiful loops I have ever hiked! This is Colorado?! 😍

Originally planned as a trail “run”, i quickly realized I’d be hiking the entire way. The altitude made every step difficult for me, i’m just not good at low oxygen! And definitely feeling the effects of an easy training year 😅 Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop was equally beautiful, smooth and runnable (looking), and brutal.

Many people do this as a 3 day backpacking trip, and I’d love to go back to spend more time absorbing these views. Getting permits is tough - even for day trips you have to book parking in advance, and there’s only a small window when you’re allowed to drive in. So worth it though, and we got so lucky with great weather! ☀️

JUST CLOSED! This one-of-a-kind home in Broomfield was snatched up quickly! With multiple offers exceeding the asking price, my sellers couldn't be more thrilled. What makes this even better is that the HK Real Estate team represented both the buyer and the seller. A big thank you to @shedakerhomes for introducing such wonderful people to this neighborhood! A huge congratulations to both sides!

Thinking of selling and not sure about the current market! Give us a call or text, we can walk through how we did it on this one!

So much positivity today! Zern, Staş, and I got up before the 🍑 of dawn to do this race and it was a real hoot 🦉. 74 km w/ 2,200+ meters of elevation made for an action packed outing 💥. Run down ⬇️:

Met a bunch of great folks.
Got some sun ☀️.
Saw some monkeys 🐒.
Both legs cramped at the same time. Then one at a time 😂 for the Zern and me. Got some salt 🧂 which went right to work.
Awesome mountain ⛰️ top finish.

After not riding for a minute, I’m quite sarisfisfied with 96th of 632 finishers. Very tired. Very happy, indeed‼️

PS - ERIC from 🇵🇭, not “Rick.”

You know that old saying it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile. 😃

So here is a few smiles from 2024. I can’t say that im happy 24/7 but I do make it a point to smile each day. It’s something my momma taught me and it’s come a long way. Keep smiling and spreading positive vibes into the new year and years to come peeps ✌🏼

First couple of jet lag-fueled rides in Taipei. Wild how the species of trees changed as we climbed the misty mountain, which was situated in one of the island’s 16 indigenous tribal areas (“Atayal,” but the “A” is silent).

We also spotted not one, but 3️⃣ of the island’s super rare forest quails.

Oh yeah, they have a handful of native bears here, too. Learning so much!!

Bike Stuff - Uo, these GoodYear/Zipp tires x 353 NSWs took these trails like a champ. Even on the descent, when I fish tailed in this one curve they found their grip nicely.

More to come!

Random Thoughts from Taipei Part I - This is my first time in Asia and so far it has been a life experience that one cannot describe with mere words; it has to be lived, tasted, smelled.

“The East” is called the “Orient” because the word “Orient” comes from the Latin word “oriens,” which means “rising” - referring to the fact that the sun rises here. So far, I can attest that it’s certainly an orientation class that many of us native the West can learn from.

For instance, the cancerous individualism (AKA “normal” in America) is all but non-existent here; individuals here know very well that without community they are nothing; it’s a part of their social and cultural DNA. There is no such thing as a “self-made(wo)man,” but, unlike in America, folks here are aware of this fact and their daily interactions with one another is proof.

The island is so, so lush; you have to beat the plants back with a stick to keep them from taking over everything, which can happen with the quickness.

There are 16 indigenous tribes native to the island, each with their own distinct languages, cultures, and traditions. The government hasn’t been the best at preserving their ways of life, but the younger generations and (ironically) the churches are filling in this gap.

I look forward to sharing more of my cycling, culinary, and cultural experiences/learnings with you all…in the hopes that they help open minds and hearts.

Good day.

UTMB recap - mile 0. Imposter syndrome hit hard the moment i arrived in Chamonix. This race was my ultimate, once in a lifetime, dream event, years in the making. Everyone looked so fit, and I did not feel ready.

At the start area i was overwhelmed with emotions. It didn’t feel real. I could barely control my face and smile, I was so intimidated. I walked over with my crew from my airbnb, arrived 30 min before the start, and stayed by the back of the crowd (probably a mistake). Finally, Vangelis’ Conquest of Paradise blasted from the speakers as the crowd erupted in cheers, just like I’d seen it so many times in videos. Chills. What am *I* doing here?! 🤯

The mass of people in front of me start inching forward. It took 5 minutes to reach the start line. I nervously look down at my watch. 6:05pm. Time to hit start. O. M. G. 😮😱‼️😭

This moment in time will forever capture a version of me, before completing UTMB 🥹

to be continued…

Thanks to everyone who sent me questions 🙏 I’ll answer a few with each recap post!

Q. What’s your go to fuel for food on the run?
A. I’ve tried many gels over the years, but have been eating less of it these days. I’ll still take gels for shorter runs or workouts, otherwise lately I like @honeystinger waffles & gummies, @maurten_official C bars, @skratchlabs gummies, @guenergylabs Roctane drink mix, all of which I brought to UTMB. For such a long race, I also need to eat real food / meals. I packed instant mashed potatoes, mac n cheese for my crew to give me at aid stations, cooked by jet boil.

Q. How well stocked were the aid stations?
A. Pretty good! There was cheese(!), crackers, salami, bread, naak products, fruit, sometimes soup, rice and pasta. Unlike the US no pb&j, oreos or candy.

Q. How was your fueling through the race?
A. My fueling sucked 😭 i probably ate only 1/3 of what I should have. I got nausea early on, just 5 hours in. Maybe from the random heat & humidity, the first night felt like a jungle and I likely fell behind on water/electrolytes. i ended up struggling for the rest of the race. For much of it I could only eat bread & crackers, everything else made me gag. I puked twice!

Spent the weekend aggressively appreciating some big trees. Who knew Taiwan had this?? Even with people in the photos, they don’t seem to quite capture how big they were.
