Thank you all who have supported A Question of Balance! We prioritized getting your copies out the door first, but at long last, I received my first copies today! A shout out to Kris Graves for all that he does to support his fellow photographers. The book came out wonderfully—if you don’t have one and would like one, they are $34. I also encourage you to check out the other stellar books from this Lost V series—link in my bio. @kgpnyc

(no.43) APPRECIATION / to all of you who have absorbed this story. The resounding feedback bolsters my faith in the power of storytelling to move the needle—to look at each other, not past one another. Nearly three years ago I began the groundwork on A Question of Balance. This work belongs to many— the hundreds of people that gave me so much along the way. Foremost, I’m indebted to all the folks I met in the Navajo Nation and Washington County that shared so much with me—their stories, perspectives, time. Thank you for the tremendous hospitality and trust—I hope I didn’t let you down. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the Center for Contemporary Documentation and their generous support, the guidance and brilliance of Alice Gabriner day and night for over a year. To Katherine Pomerantz @time who believed in the power of this story from the start. To Kaya Berne who was instrumental in teasing out an edit from over a thousand negatives. Karl Vick, Victor Williams and Sam Jacobs who coached me through edits, words, and design. To the Ted Scripps Fellowship for a year in the classroom at CU Boulder studying all things water and indigenous history. To the experts, scientists, and peers who gave me so much insight and inspiration. Lastly, to my wife @gengennygenevieve for being my creative partner and enduring my months away.

(no.5) Above his family home, Tim Holiday shouts across the divide, echoes cascading across canyon walls in slowly descending tones as they overlap, forming an eerie melody / On paper, the Navajo Nation is drenched in water. Under the “first in line, first in right” principle that defines water use in the West, the Diné have first dibs on the same declining supply that serves Washington County, which has roughly as many people on 1/10th the land: the Colorado River, its tributaries, and two underlying aquifers. Yet little of it reaches them.

It’s surreal to be here, on the cover of @TIME … the sum of three years of research/pitching/building relationships, then nearly a year in the field, and a handful of life changing experiences. This story is a testament of the trust placed in me by the Diné and the folks in Washington County—thank you for letting me tell your story. There’s so much more to share and many more people to thank… stay tuned!
