Last Saturday I participated in the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon.

I had several things I wanted to achieve this time around - to train smart, to race without earbuds, to keep a consistent pace throughout, and to resist the urge to walk on the course. Check, check, check, and check.

The reaction of people who have (kindly) asked what my official finish time was has been interesting to me. Some seem disappointed at what I tell them, while others have marveled at my results.

It’s caused me to reflect on the whole idea of goals and success and just how blurry my brain gets when I compare my “checked boxes” with others’. I have to remind myself that my goals are MINE to work toward, and how each of us measures our successes is totally relative. I mean, what’s attainable for one person can be like shooting for the moon for another, right?

I have a friend who was a half-an-hour behind me on Saturday, but has improved so much since he first started running. And I cheer for him, because he puts in the work and is amazing.

I have another friend who’s already a lightening fast runner, yet continually pushes outdo his personal best. And I cheer for him, because he puts in the work and is amazing.

It’s the STRIVING and the PERSEVERING that I find so admirable. It’s the EFFORT and the DISCIPLINE that I find so inspiring. I’m talking about running here, but we could say the same things for just about anyone working toward just about anything on just about every level.

“Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s yours.” My friend Zero Dean wrote those words, and I think they’re spot-on.

So, thank you, Cap City, for being such a fantastic event from top to bottom and for making me think. Next time I won’t be the same runner I was last Saturday.

That’s my goal, anyway.
