The first line of every Armenian fairy tale, THERE WAS, THERE WAS NOT tells the collective myth of a homeland lost forever – and four women’s resistance to that loss.

//

Mit den ersten Worten jedes armenischen Märchens erzählt THERE WAS, THERE WAS NOT den kollektiven Mythos einer für immer verlorenen Heimat und vom Widerstand vierer Frauen gegen diesen Verlust.

ZIBAYO (@zibayo_) is a creative duo founded in 2016 in Johannesburg by German-Armenian painter Lilli Bagradyans and South African photographer Valentino Zondi. Emerging from a particularly fertile moment in South Africa’s cultural landscape, ZIBAYO’s practice is rooted in the fusion of their respective disciplines.

Working exclusively through analogue processes, the duo integrates Bagradyans’ paintings on transparent materials directly into the urban environment, which are then captured through Zondi’s photography. This method collapses painting, photography, and site into a single, inseparable image.

Their resulting exhibition series engages critically with contemporary South African social policy, using the city itself as both subject and stage.
