Courage isn’t always unapologetic bravery or a thundering heart. Sometimes, it’s choosing to feel the sadness and still reach for connection.

In this tender moment, Zillah reminds us that it’s not about erasing the pain; it’s about allowing it to open a pathway toward each other, and toward our collective voice.

Even when the world feels heavy, we’re not alone in carrying it.

📍“Courage isn’t easy, but I think it’s a whole lot easier than being scared.”

Deep thanks to Zillah for sharing her wisdom with such honesty and heart. This conversation felt like sitting down with a new friend, and we are so grateful to share it with you.

“Toxic masculinity and white supremacy connect in this historical moment different from before. The toxicity is directed at the fluidity of gender and its meanings and choices alongside the changing borders of family and work; public and private; nation and globe. And, we need better theory for seeing how misogyny enables/instigates racism, now, within fascism. Better theory means better thinking and language to see with, connecting the dots rather than severing or ignoring them.” - Zillah Eisenstein, Political Theorist, Activist & Emerita Professor of the Department of Politics at Ithaca

Dara gives visibility to the multi-marginalized communities of the disabled. She condemns covert disenfranchisement. She reveals the caste status of being born disabled in a country of the ‘survival of the fittest.’ She uncovers the problem and points to its resolution: BIPOC disabled people need to be at the heart of disability justice. Black liberation and abolitionism become the new promise of full citizenship for abled and disabled alike.”—Zillah Eisenstein, activist and author of Abolitionist Socialist Feminist THANK YOU 🙏🏿 my sister @zillahe TODAY: Pre-order my debut book 📕 To Be A Problem: A Black Woman’s Survival in the Racist Disability Rights Movement published by @beaconpress at #bookstores today! “The government hearings on education are a public mobilization of right-wing interests to curtail and stymie any further democratization of our universities along sexual, racial, and gender lines. And much that happens at elite universities defends a status quo of established systems of power and privilege. It is why they are depicted as elite.”

“Although I and all feminists I know and work with condemn all rape, naming and indicting Hamas without indicting Israel and other war-defined nations is wrong-headed and does not do enough. Instead, it justifies and extends the bombing and murdering of Gazans.

None of us want to have the horror of war rape of women to be weaponized by the very nation that is the perpetrator of this war. The atrocities towards women in war, all wars, are at the heart of misogynist nationalisms. Hamas is not specific to this — but part of the universalized general truth that wars are fought with and on women’s bodies. Israel cannot be allowed to use rape by Hamas as a mobilizing factor in continuing to justify the war on Gaza, while Israel perpetuates this savage war and its own rapes.”

Israel’s government is pursuing a suicidal as well as a genocidal path: read what Masha Gessen is hearing from dissidents in Israel. Subscribers to the New Yorker, share. State violence as a weapon of control is everywhere and spreading. Not one of us can afford to look away. “First they came for the (fill in the blank)….” Link: https://bit.ly/3Sw0O1p

When one’s body is demanding everything from you to heal you become self-consumed with the process. And yet, as I started to heal, I then wondered how these people in Gaza and Israel and the West Bank can do it — with their bodies under constant siege. And in Gaza the hunger and thirst? Have you ever known thirst with no water available? The total domination of bodily needs? And then, the bombs. The noise. The destruction. Death so close, and continuously.

Episode five of our podcast is now live! Sarah and I are joined by American political theorist and gender studies professor Zillah Eisenstein.

Zillah shares about her life, her work, her activism, and her writing. Eisenstein's parents were members of the American communist party, and she shares about her experiences growing up as a child of the communist party during the Civil Rights movement, and how that has shaped her politics throughout her life. Eisenstein discusses the importance of being willing to risk in building collaborative activism and comradeship, and touches upon her ambivalence about the discourse around "white fragility" within white organizing spaces. Join us for this fascinating episode, as we explore how intersectionality (or "marbling", as Zillah prefers to refer to it) touches on every aspect of modern life, and how to practice hope as a strategy for effective resistance and change.
