Sometimes a simple overnighter is enough…don’t plan a mega trip when a simple night out in the woods will do😁

football in wyoming
august 2026

this fish was caught on a tailtucker nymph in a trib to the greys river. i meandered my way down a steep embankment not knowing if i was going to catch a damn thing because i saw the coloration of the water in the greys. this trib was less dirty than the main stem. i took a chance.

i started off fishing wet flies and sakasa and jun kebari of the stiff and soft hackle varieties. i was getting some takes, but they wanted something deeper in the water column. the sub was just rising up above the mountains and starting to hit the water.

this fish was caught after i fish the area on the way up stream and i turned around. always fish a run, riffle, eddy, whatever in multiple drifts patterns and different directions of drift. the fish might not be feeding on dead drifts. this fish most definitely was not. he took the fly on a down stream presentation of swimming my fly through the hole from the drop off and keeping it up in the water column. the weight of the tungsten beadhead would sink the fly and then i would swim/swing my fly in the water up to me. pulling and pausing my rod to tempt the fish….tapping and pulsing my rod along the way.

BAM 💥

it is so satisfying catching a fish exactly where i think it will be.

my biggest native and wild fish (probably)
out west, 2025

i said it once, twice, and probably 15 times now…but i am no size queen. but this one got me going!

i remembered i hadnt posted this catch because i was recently back in the area for @dragontailtenkara wyoming campout in alpine, wyoming. had seen these monster cutties hanging with the other fish throughout this waterway and didnt expect to land one or get one to take my fly. alas! i was very short of breath when i got this baby in. the adrenaline was pumping.

i caught it on the @tenkaratanuki ninja 350 rod using tanuki’s micro-tapered line at 11’ with a “tailtucker nymph” that had a 3.8mm (or so) tungsten beadhead. pattern created by @camp_made

i keep getting told/asked/whatever “that isnt a big fish” “tenkara cant catch big fish” “why not blah dee blah”

i tenkara because i like the way it makes me feel. put that on a shirt. 😉

How it feels to catch your first iwana in Nikko, Japan... 🤘

The tenkara portion of our trip ended on Friday morning, but the wonderful memories will last forever. Thank you to the Nikko Tenkara crew for making this adventure a reality!

first full day at the @dragontailtenkara wyoming camp out
August 2026

i had a full day catching snake river cutties off a creek that dumps into the palisades reservoir. i visited this creek with @idaho_fly_guy and @mkeeganuhl and got to fish next to a few other tenkara anglers! @rob_lambeth

this was a fantastic day on the water and i really enjoyed fishing here for the second year in a row.

first catch of idaho…

actually maybe the third 🤔

moved on in 5 minutes bc of thunder but did slide into the water on my ass, got my left shoe wet, and lost one fly. typical.

either way, what a nice way to end the day after traveling all day to get to alpine, wyoming and be amongst some other likeminded individuals who wanna fish tenkara style!

i have yet to catch a fish in wyoming. idaho has been good to me in the past. looking forward to more cutthroat action!!!
