It’s my birthday!

And it’s been a dope ass day.

And a challenging year full of hills, laughter, and lots of learning.

But I’m still here.

First photo is my first day of being 54.
The rest are what 53 looked like this past year.

So many real life meetings with IG friends!

Grateful for this community. And especially for the privilege of aging.

Roll call: where are my fellow capricorns? 🤣

Sending love to all. Take whatever you need. 🩵

This restaurant closing hits deep. So much of my life was spent within these walls with many family and friends who have passed over the years. As a kid, I’d come here with my MeeMaw and PeePaw.

As a high school student, we would ditch class fifteen minutes early to drive down the road from Travis High School and get their lunch specials. In college, I worked here; SXSW, ACL, Silver Spurs Wednesday night takeovers, UT football game days (before the stadium had booze!) I worked here through graduate school and made some amazing friends. Working at the bars downtown, we’d go there after bar meetings at Charlie’s. As an adult, we held our 20-year high school reunion here. Numerous friends and family birthday lunches & dinners and my retirement dinner with my parents. ♥️ Celebrated one year Cancer free here! Jeff once joked “if someone wanted to kill you, they would just need to drive by and look in that 4th booth in the bar!”

I was there the last night the Lavaca location closed, and I came tonight. I’ll be here tomorrow night for the final night.

Sad to see it go, but happy the owners can enjoy their retirement. Thanks for feeding my ass for 40 years, thank you for the memories, and all the laughs. #worldpeacethroughtexmexmymeona

Fuck you, Fiona, and definitely fuck YOU, Rosie “resilience.”

First off, Fiona (my imposter syndrome… if you haven’t named this shit, highly recommend!), you don’t own me anymore.

I’m smart enough, I’m funny enough, and gosh darn it, people like me. 😆🤘

As for you, Rosie, just because I can power through something doesn’t mean I should.

Take your “you’re so resilient” praise elsewhere. It’s not a compliment in my book.

I’ve been working so hard on letting go of shame and fear this past year and let me tell you, IT. IS. LIBERATING.

You are such a badass. I hope you know that!

What BS are you currently giving the middle finger to? Please tell me. I’m so itching to know! Sharing is caring and it helps and hypes others up.

Describe NeuroDiversion 2025 vibes in 26 words?

No problem.

Acceptance Badass Creative Dynamic Energetic Fun Groundbreaking Humanity Inspiring Joyful Kindness Lively Mask-free
Nurturing Openminded Passionate Quirky Radical Safe Tenacious Uplifting Visionary Welcoming Xenial Yin Yang Zealous

PS Xenial means hospitable, like the opposite of xenophobic. I have a PhD and I had to look it up, too 😆🤘

But in one word, I’ll just say FRIENDS.

Made some new ones here and it was effortless. Can’t wait to see y’all next year.

If you’re looking for connection with the most unconditionally accepting neurodivergent community, consider attending NeuroDiversion 2026.

Comment ND 26 and my girl bot Britney will send you ye olde 🔗

You’re a badass. You know that, right? 🩵

You can leave teaching but teaching never really leaves you…

I was a tenured college professor & had worked at the same university for 17 years when I decided something had to change.

I wasn’t well. I loved my job in many ways, adored my colleagues & students, but I was SO burnt out & nothing helped. So I quit. That decision was simultaneously sudden + a long time coming.

That was almost two years ago. I had no idea I had ADHD. And I swore I’d never publish anything academic again. 😭

I lied.

I’m working on a book on Neuroinclusive Teaching!

In the last 10 years of my career, I focused on subverting dominant paradigms. My curriculum shifted to teach *everything* through the lens of social justice, centering historically marginalized voices & practicing “ungrading”. I didn’t have the vocabulary outside of DEI for what I was seeking to do, but I now know that what I was ultimately aiming for was neuroinclusivity.

Traditional classrooms were built for some bullshit mythical monolith of a student who doesn’t actually exist.

Neuroinclusive teaching ditches outdated, one-size-fits-all methods & embraces flexible, student-centered strategies that support diverse brains, including ADHDers, autistic students & other ND folx.

I empower educators in any context to rethink outdated practices, dismantle ableist structures & create learning spaces where all students thrive.

But let’s go further & ask “what if grades are part of the problem?” Grading reinforces power structures, rewards compliance over actual learning & creates a hierarchy that stifles creativity, growth & autonomy. It takes the joy out of learning.

We *think* grading systems are how things have always been, but it’s not true. Current systems are mostly a 20th century invention & we’ve been fooled into believing that this is THE way to assess learning. We’ll explore ungrading + alternatives that shift the focus from ranking students to fostering curiosity & real-world skills.

If you’re newly diagnosed, looking for resources + community, come on! This event is for you!

If you’re in the Austin area, hit me up! I’d love to see you. 🤘
