“Poetic, political, and above all incontrovertibly material” [The New Yorker], Kogonada’s fourth feature, the experimental drama zi, follows the title character, played by Michelle Mao, a concert violinist whose aimless peregrinations through the streets of Hong Kong are interrupted by visions of what may be either her past or future, a condition she attempts to explain to a new American acquaintance (Haley Lu Richardson, Columbus) while a stranger (Jin Ha) observes the pair from a distance. A valentine to the textures and colors of the Fragrant Harbor as seen by night, featuring music by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, the formally audacious, shot-on-the-fly zi is a film of unusual delicacy and reserve, one whose air of mystery abides long after the credits have rolled. Opens November 6th at Metrograph.

Thank you @bscine @britishcinematographer for featuring @zithemovie, a true independent film directed by @kogonada and shot by Benjamin Loeb in which I was invited on as an Additional Cinematographer. It has been about a year since “zi” wrapped production in Hong Kong. To say that this experience was one of the most uniquely satisfying experiences is an understatement. Thank you Kogonada, Ben, @christopherradcliff, @thatdudechung, @michelleforbreakfast, @haleyluhoo, and Jin for inviting me and @bonny.with.the.y to join your film family. To work with people who are not only excellent artists and experts at the craft but amazing human beings makes it easy to go above and beyond for them. Thanks for trusting me to capture Hong Kong as a character. Also, thank you @jessxsnow for being the magic who brings collaborators onto the same artistic wavelength. Thank you @tskqqq for hosting and sharing your massage chair with me and Bon. And thanks @boboid 👊. So grateful to have shared this Hong Kong experiment with you all.

First Look returns this Thursday (4/30) with the New York premiere of ZI. Few contemporary American filmmakers are as drawn to the beauty and difficulty of interpersonal connection as Kogonada. Set amidst the glistening high-rises and teeming streets of Hong Kong, his newest film, the jewel-like ZI, is another marvel of restraint, a small-scale character study that feels expansive in scope. Kogonada and producer Christopher Radcliff will join us in person for a post-screening discussion. Click the link in our bio for tickets or go to movingimage.org/firstlook2026
