'Out Of The Blue'

Working from her hometown Marrawah on the wild west coast of Tasmania, Zoe Grey returned home after suddenly losing her mother. Grief and reconnection with this remote coastal town seep into her works, channelling an active energy that grows and organically flows across the canvas. The rocks on the shoreline, the deep blue sea, and the weather that whips through the environment are translated into expressive abstract washes of colour and textural mark-making.

Zoe Grey × Joshua Andree @ Despard Gallery
'Personal landscapes'

"Two Tasmanian artists both evoke the emotions of their personal landscapes at Despard this September, though with entirely different methodologies. In the northwest of the state, Zoe Grey draws on the memory of place in both abstraction and text-based work, while south of Hobart, Joshua Andree turns his gaze upwards to muse on the ever-shifting sky."

Introducing The Surfer’s Journal. It’s quite the unique magazine that comes out every second month. The magazine takes an independent view on the surfing experience delving into topics that get little attention elsewhere, covering travel adventures, surfboard design, profiles of surfing’s most colorful subjects, and the choicest surf photography in every issue.
You will find old ones and the newest editions at the store. 🌊

ANNOUNCING: Zoe Grey in “Placeheld” — a group exhibition | Opening April

Making her return to Michael Reid after nearly four years, lutruwita/Tasmania-based artist Zoe Grey will appear next month in ‘Placeheld’.

Grey lives and works in Marrawah, on the far northwest coast of lutruwita/Tasmania, on Peeraper Country—a remote township exposed to the force of the Southern Ocean and shaped by persistent wind and weather. Following a period away, these works emerge from her return to this rugged environment.

“I am relearning the shape of the rocky shore in the white-washed bay,” says the artist, “the feel of windy nights and the picture-perfect presence of an ever-present mountain under an uninterrupted moon.”

Working across painting, drawing and collage, Grey’s compositions move between figuration and abstraction. Gestural marks and layered surfaces evoke the shifting terrain of this place—rock, sea and sky compressed into a language both intuitive and deeply observed.

In 2024, Grey was awarded the prestigious Hadley’s Art Prize, a moment that marked a significant recognition of her practice. This was followed by her selection as a finalist in the 2025 Glover Prize.
