yes it’s true i had a beautiful seattle summer. it felt like i was a lemon slice on the edge of a sweating glass of a perfectly sweetened half iced tea half lemonade. i spent much time gazing upon and adoring the mountains. i was enriched to be so close to various breezy bodies of water, especially lake washington, who i got to know better this season. i fulfilled a life long dream of meeting the mariner moose, and in a traditional khmer outfit no less. i observed scuttling creatures, big and small. i was extremely pleased to introduce max to the amiable fremont troll; they got along nicely, like old friends. i went on many excellent walks with my friends, especially through the tunnel to the east portal viewpoint, which has such a gratifying ta-da reveal. so yes ultimately i marinated in all that i love most about the region and learned lots and will take it all with me into the long toronto winter to come

In case you missed it! Lockdown wasn’t filmed about prison. It was made inside it...

This last year we made a short film inside Washington State Penitentiary. Lockdown was written, built, and filmed inside the Sustainable Practices Lab at Washington State Penitentiary - by incarcerated creators telling their own stories, on their own terms. The script was developed collaboratively by men inside the facility, shaped through months of writing and reflection with filmmaker and writer Don Roff (@donroff).

Acting was led by actress and educator Tiffany Sinclair (@skyegardens), giving incarcerated performers professional tools to inhabit their roles with confidence and intention. For many, this was the first time they were invited to be seen as artists - not subjects. Set-building, props, and production design were created on site by the incarcerated crew themselves, using the resources available inside the prison. What could have been a limitation became ingenuity.

Teaching how to make a movie was led by Megean M Sanchez (@megeantheconqueror), Vik Chopra (@vikchopra), and John Shaw working alongside incarcerated collaborators as peers. Professional equipment - cinema cameras, sound gear, and lighting - was brought inside, reinforcing that the work being made was serious, real, and worthy of respect.

There's a thing that happens when you have to wake up before the sunrises and runs. Somebody complains about his shin splints. Two guys argue about whether negative splits are worth it- the same argument happening in every run club in America this morning.
And you think: oh. These are just people.
You knew that already. But knowing it and standing next to it are different things.

We build a lot of language to avoid this. Inmate. Offender. A case file with one event in it, permanently. It's easier that way and if a person is only the worst hour of their life, you never have to think about them again.

Nobody out there is that. There's a guy who's coached new runners for two years. A guy who slept through the night for the first time in a decade after he started training. They're people who did something, and people who are still here - still working, still up at 6am for a run in weather nobody would choose.

Tomorrow at 8AM PST, we're releasing the first episode of Stories From The Inside.

Every week, a group of volunteers signs in at Washington State Penitentiary, walks out to the yard, and goes running with the men there. The Concrete Conquerors is a run club inside WSP, sustained entirely by people who are not paid to be there - they have jobs, families, and their own training schedules, and they keep showing up anyway.

On the track, everything goes quiet. No titles, no numbers. Just people running next to each other and pushing each other through the last lap. For that hour, everybody out there is a runner. But the thing we didn't expect to be filming is what happens to the volunteers.

Each of them went in believing they were the ones bringing something. Every one of them came out saying they received more than they gave. What you find inside is not what you were handed- it's people looking out for each other, holding each other accountable, showing up at 6am in weather nobody would choose. The volunteers didn't carry humanity into that place. They found it already there. That changes how you see the whole system, and it doesn't stay at the gate.
