New Haven Pizza Myth No. 2: Zuppardi’s Apizza in West Haven is a Sleeper: FALSE!

Just because @zuppardisapizza is in the middle of a residential neighborhood in a different town doesn’t mean the people don’t know! They’ve had a loyal following since 1934 & the lines out the door testify to this.

Just ask these people about @zupps: @kenjilopezalt @lbardugo @pauliegee @scottspizzatours @graceyspizza @original_vincenzos_pizza @bestpizza33 @adamrichman to name a few!

There’s always terrific food and drinks at the A-1 Toyota @apizza_feast presented by @tasteofnewhaven . I’ve had the pleasure of covering the US Pizza Capital’s Feast 3 years in a row. This year, I’m doing something different. I’m naming my 5 Favorite Bites of the Feast. Here’s how I did it:

-Keeping with my reputation as the guy who judges Specialty Pizzas rather than Cheese Pizzas, I tried to order unique and new-to-me slices.

-I did not visit all of the food and drink vendors. For instance, I did not have a slice from @frankpepepizza since I’ve eaten there numerous times. I also missed @apizza_feast legend @biggreentruckpizza .

- @estpizzanewhaven let me choose the toppings for a whole Specialty pizza. Since I was involved in the creation, I’m excluding @estpizzanewhaven from consideration, even though it was deliciously worthy. I’ll be posting a separate Est reel. And that pizza is the cover shot for this reel.

Check out my Fav 5 Bites, other good food and drinks and some miscellaneous highlights from the 2026 @apizza_feast . . .

The first three slides are the first New Haven pizza I made out of my PizzaMaster. It was Spring 2022. Our shop had been open for a few months, I'd just hired employee number 2 a few weeks before. This business was set up to champion all forms of pizza and this was my attempt to move beyond the New York, Detroit and Focaccia I'd made for the first 5 months of opening. I very very strongly believe in keeping true to the origins of pizza styles - even though I don't believe in authenticity outside of the original (you can't make New York pizza, Detroit pizza, New Haven pizza outside of its place of origin with authenticity) I do believe in staying to the whys and hows of those styles coming about. I'd not seen New Haven that followed those whys and hows of the OGs in the UK or Ireland before then, so wanted to have a stab at it. I went deep down the pizzamaking.com forum, read Colin's book, went down all the online rabbitholes. Even spoke online to Sally's. Our way has always been to dedicate completely to the style, no hybrids, magpieing things from here or there. So that meant a lot of flour research; finding the right protein levels and W rating from flours and grains milled exclusively in the UK and Ireland, as with all our pizzas. Researching how to make the dough with exclusively sourdough method, how to shape it and how to get a coal oven bake from an electric oven. I wince a little now at how this pizza looked, but you know what, it was decent. I hope we've evolved since then. Making this took me and the shop crew on a journey to West Haven and New Haven in 2024. We met Lori Zuppardi. We met Rick Consigilio, son of Sally. It was a wonder day that can never be beaten

This style is incredibly close to my heart because we are sort of known..I am anyway... for hard bakes. Colour brings flavour and I love it.

New Haven pizza is back. You can order online now for Saturday night. We're doing some website testing, hopefully I've not messed it up. See you Saturday if you fancy one.

Last four slides are ours.

That’s a season 2 wrap on The F&F Pizza Sessions! Here’s a glimpse at Tuesday’s finale, which proved that it never hurts to have a mariachi band and one of the best chefs Argentina has ever produced making paella at your pizza party. What an honor it was to close out the season with Dan Pearson, Jim Ormrod and Anthony Pearce, and our old pal Fernando Trocca.

Thank you to every attendee, chef, friend, relative, and Frankies team member who made this such a beautiful summer for us. It wouldn’t have been possible without our partners: Blackbird, San Pellegrino, Doordash, Moretti Forni, Birra Moretti, Slice Out Hunger, Cairnspring Mills, and A’ Siciliana.

Stay tuned for some event news from Court Street coming very soon…
