It was a sweaty morning and my dance studies in Berlin, I was standing on one leg, shaking, holding a Graham posture, almost falling out of it when my teacher looked at me and said: No matter what you do - NEVER GIVE UP! This moment will stay with me forever… Two years later - my first trip to Cuba and I was going to take some Afro Cuban classes. I felt incredibly lost and so stiff - like I had never danced before. Being a classical dancer for 20 years didn’t help at all at this point. I moved to Guadalajara, Mexico where I took classes with my maestros @ivanvaldespino43 and @zaine_rosabal who are the most amazing teachers 🥹 There is still so much to improve and learn (can’t wait to take those classes again!!) but this is a reminder that consistent training can get you far even though it feels impossible at the start. @oneysistonyitalia @luluarroyom @monica.ro.escudero @dianalu253 you know what im talking about… 😅 Grateful for this process 🥹 #afrocuban #salsadancing

But we need to get the history right: The DNA of Mambo is 100% Cuban. 🧬 Before the Palladium era, before the New York hustle, Mambo was born in Havana in the late 1930s. Musicians like Orestes López and Arsenio Rodríguez started taking the traditional Cuban Danzón and injecting it with heavy, syncopated Afro-Cuban rhythms. They called this fiery, open section of the music the “Mambo”—a word rooted in the Kikongo language that translates roughly to “conversation with the gods”. 🥁🗣️ New York gave Mambo the spotlight and evolved the style of how we step on the dance floor today (shoutout to the jazz and tap influences!). Most dancers are trained to think about steps, patterns, and counts. But when you watch Edwar, he doesn’t just dance on top of the music. He dances inside the music. He reacts to percussion, pauses, accents, bass lines, and phrasing, so the dancing looks like a conversation with the band rather than a sequence of moves. He can dance for a long time without doing anything complicated, but it never looks boring because he’s constantly changing rhythm, timing, energy and intention. This is also why learning from him can feel difficult at the beginning. You’re not just learning steps, you’re learning how to move your body properly, how to listen to music, how to change rhythm, how to use space, how to pause, and how to control your movement. These are things that take longer to understand, but they completely change the way you dance. And that’s really the difference. Steps make you a dancer.
