Bold and dynamic, Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943), née Taeuber, was a major female force in the European avant-garde movements of Dadaism and Concrete art. Her career spanned two world wars and ushered in a new era of design and workmanship. In pursuit of opportunities and acceptance for her craft, she pushed against the limited artistic roles of women and brought applied art into the mainstream alongside fine art.  Born into a large Prussian family, she had an early proclivity towards art and performance. She attended the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen, Switzerland from 1908 to 1910, and then moved to Germany in 1911 to take courses at the School of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg and Walter von Debschitz’s studio in Munich. At the time, strict rules dictated what women could study — Taeuber-Arp was allowed to work on textiles, beading and weaving, skills that were typically considered ‘women’s work.’ She soon found that these applied arts, unlike fine art, were more accepting of abstraction. Through textiles, Taeuber-Arp could experiment with colors and shapes verging on avant-garde and still achieve commercial success with more ease than her fine art counterparts. Originally founded in Hamburg most of the band members moved later in the 80’s to West Berlin and became pioneers of the electronic music scene. 110 years ago in Zurich a group of artists decided that if the world had gone mad, art would not pretend to be reasonable. In 1916, at Cabaret Voltaire, DADA was born - a revolt against logic, against war, against aesthetics "as they should be". Absurdity as the language of truth. Chance as a method. Chaos as honesty. The year 2026 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Dadaism. And at the end of last year I met Jacek Katos - a poet from Zielona Góra - who handed me a book of his work. Inside, a Dadaist poem. As if time had come full circle. Or rather - as if the circle had forgotten it was a circle. I decided to recreate this poem not on paper, but in space. And so a sculpture titled "Before the Future" was created. On its surface one can read the poem "Zgrudewiszcze Badgaszcze". Words here are not illustration. They are matter. Letters become texture. Meaning, if it appears, is an accident. Is this still poetry or already an object? Has modern art not long been more Dadaist than it cares to admit? Maybe DADA never really ended. Maybe it simply changed its medium. 110 years later, absurdity is still doing quite well. And perhaps that is the only reasonable news.
