Note: Maverick is a task-trained service dog which gives him access to places like Disney World, I give the cast members permission to pet him and they always ask if it’s okay! Dopamine spikes because they expect access 🧠✨ If they’ve been allowed to greet often, the brain builds a pattern: See dog → Get dog. Now the leash blocks access 🔒 Anticipation turns into frustration. Frustration raises arousal 📈 Adrenaline increases. Impulse control drops. The higher the excitement, the lower the thinking brain functions. That’s why your dog “knows commands” but can’t listen around other dogs. They’re not stubborn. They’re over threshold 🚨 Excitement reactivity often looks like: Whining Hard pulling Bouncing Hyper fixation 👀 Explosive lunging 💥 It can look aggressive. But the motivation is access, not defense. 1. I was the one who left the bed out knowning Belle loves to shred this one for some reason. Management is 🔑. Don’t want somethig shredded? Don’t give your dog access. 2. Shredding is an inate dog behavior that they don’t have access to often. Dogs don’t shred because they’re “trying to be alpha” or they’re “trying to piss you off”. They shred because they enjoy it and it relieves stress. 3. I’ve never taught Belle an alternate bhevaior or taught her to specifically disengage from this particular bed. You'd be amazed at how many undesirable behaviors improve when you give your dog access to different environments, more opportunities to express their natural behaviours and be curious. Dogs deserve more than the same streets where not much changes. The lack of stimulation may be a cause for their inability to rest properly at home, constant overarousal and continued rehearsal of unwanted behaviours. If you're dealing with issues such as reactivity, pulling on the lead or lack of focus on walks, this could be down to the predictability of their daily walks, knowing exactly which direction they're going in and anticipating seeing certain things or expecting something to happen in specific areas.
