Over the summer I had a conversation with a friend. She told me that one of the kindest things someone ever did for her was tell her the straight truth about her abortions. She said it hurt and she grieved. But she also said, it was the beginning of hope. After her abortions, she had spiral into addiction and a self-destruction. She said, “Someone cared enough about me to risk awkward and uncomfortable conversation to tell me the truth I needed to hear.” Her life is completely changed now. Have you noticed that doctors don't congratulate women on their pregnancies straight away? They tend to wait to see if the woman is happy or not. If she signals that she's happy, then the doctor will consider the health of the baby and congratulate the woman on her child. But if the woman signals that she is not happy about this, then the word baby vanishes and the question is when can we book an abortion? The baby should be recognised as inherently valuable simply because it is human, but instead the value of the baby is determined by the adults. It’s wishful thinking to say it's only happening in "tragic circumstances.” Abortions happen at 6+ months for social and psychological reasons. The law is written to allow abortion for any reason and in action it is what happens. It is anti-woman to propose that an abortion is the care that she needs. Abortion just ignores her real needs. She needs is psychological care, practical help and support from her community…..but instead we brush all of her problems under the rug by offering an abortion. We just make her more invisible again by removing what seemed to be the obvious problem… the baby.
