I started this little painting a few studio sessions ago and finally came back to it with fresh eyes—and my undivided attention. I’m loving how these layers are building and how the warm and cool colors are pushing against each other. Sometimes a little time away is exactly what a painting needs. Flexibility is key in my studio. 🩵🧡What grabbed you first the orange or the teal? #expressivepainting #colorpalettes #studiotime #artprocessvideo #abstractartwork
‘Afternoon at Hampstead Heat’ is a painting I painted in London, together with @jacksons_art pleinair painting group last year 🩵 it’s an expression of lively landscape in summer heat. Sun was shining, birds were singing and I completely forgot, that I’m in the city.. it was beautiful and joyful day and the painting carries this energy 🌀 this painting is part of my series The spirit of landscape and it’s available #pleinairpainting #mixedmedialandscape #expressivelandscape #expressivepainting #emergingartist
Adding and removing… all in an afternoon’s work! This was a couple of hours and at times it didn’t go smoothly! But building up layers is no bad thing and ultimately creates depth in the painting. I had to step away at that point because I was worn out! #seapainterstudio #expressivepainting #northdevonartist
Painting faster isn’t about rushing yourself. It’s about giving yourself less time to interfere with what your body wants to happen. Here are 7 reasons why you should move faster when painting… but read until the end, because there is more to it! 1. You stay closer to instinct. You respond before you have time to overthink every mark. 2. Your marks carry more energy. Speed helps preserve gesture, movement, rhythm and confidence. 3. You interrupt perfectionism. There is less time to tidy, correct or make every shape feel “right.” 4. You create more variety naturally. Your pressure, direction, scale and movement change more freely. 5. You allow accidents to happen. Unexpected overlaps, edges, color mixtures and shapes often create the most interesting moments. 6. You become less precious. When you work quickly, it becomes easier to cover, scrape back or change something you liked. 7. It’s simply more fun. There’s something incredibly freeing about moving fast, following impulses, making a mess and seeing what happens. And when painting feels playful, you’re often more willing to experiment, take risks and surprise yourself. But here’s the thing… Painting quickly does NOT mean you should keep painting quickly until the painting is finished. At some point, you need to stop. Step back, look and assess What is working and what’s not? What needs more space? What needs more calm? This is where structure comes in to play. Then, when you understand what the painting needs, you can move back into action again. Paint quickly. Stop. Look. Decide. Paint again. That rhythm between intuition and intention is where expressive abstract painting really starts to come alive. If the “stop and look” part is where you tend to get stuck, I created the free Clarity Kit to help you know what to look for before you keep adding more paint. Comment CLARITY and I’ll send it to you. #abstractpainting #abstractartist #expressivepainting #intuitivepainting abstractart
When in doubt, add whimsy 🧚 Ok but in all seriousness I’m very happy with the direction this painting has gone in. It screams summer to me. Can’t wait to see how it looks in a space 🥹 My website’s under construction btw! But this painting will be part of a collection release next month, so stay tuned! Into The Distance🏔️ Light gathers in the foreground, while the depth of the landscape slowly opens in the background. The painting is built on this quiet contrast, on the closeness of light and the depth that quietly draws us in. Simple forms, open space, and winter stillness shaped by light. Jednoduché tvary, otvorený priestor a zimné ticho formované svetlom. #oilpainting #landscapepainting #winterpainting #modernimpressionism #expressivepainting

The landscape doesn't wait for you to be ready. 🌿 The light shifts. The clouds move. The tide comes in. Painting outdoors teaches you to be decisive. To commit. To trust your first mark. In the studio, you can stop, step back, think. Outside, you have to respond. That urgency, that's what makes outdoor painting so transformative. It's not just about the painting. It's about learning to trust yourself. If you have ever worked outdoors, what would you say is your biggest struggle?👇 Sam x . . . #PleinAirPainting #OutdoorArtist #PaintingOutdoors #AbstractLandscape #ArtistMindset #ExpressivePainting #LandscapeArt #SamBoughtonArt #PleinAirAbstract #ArtLife
In my sketchbooks I work from dark to light using water-based mixed media to loosen up my painting approach. I cover these techniques and many more tips for freeing up your landscape painting in my online course (see link in bio). I’m also planning to introduce a new course soon following on from these ideas by taking sketches into finished paintings #contemporarylandscapepainting #expressivepainting #onlinecourse #artworkshops #contemporarypainting
