Most people think you make a movie first and sell it after. My first film went the other way. It was sold before we shot a single frame. That's called a pre-sale, and a lot of independent films get made exactly like this. What else in the film business do you think works backwards?
AFM is 23 days out, and a lot of producers still aren’t sure who the right buyer is for their film. We broke US distributors into four categories, and starting tomorrow we’re covering one a day. Who is your film made for? #AFM2026 #indiefilm #filmdistribution #indieproducers #filmsales
Film investors care about this one thing more than anything else. In order to get funding, it’s important to understand that these investors don’t always see things the way we do. You are the creative mind, they tend to be more analytical and that’s ok.

It’s not your fault! You don’t know what you don’t know. And not knowing how to budget properly as a film worker is a common theme. After almost 10-years of working in the film industry and as someone who considers themselves pretty good with money, I still struggle with the ebb and flow of income that comes from working in the film industry. Although I keep myself minimally out of debt, managed to buy a cottage and still travel regularly during my off-seasons – it can sometimes still feel like a grind and a race to the next paycheque for that stability. In the last 2-3 years, I realized it does not have to be that way. Enough is enough. I’m learning better money habits that have helped minimize my financial stress, and I hope I can help the next generation to make better choices sooner. If this is also something you’re looking to do. Give me a follow to learn my tips and what’s worked and hasn’t worked, so far. #filmcrew #canada #filmproduction #finance #setlife
Get Out cost $4.5 million to make and grossed over $255 million worldwide. But who actually collects the money and makes sure everyone gets paid? That’s where a CAMA comes in. A Collection Account Management Agreement puts an independent company in charge of collecting certain film revenues and paying investors, producers, and backend participants according to the agreed waterfall. But what happens if your movie doesn’t have one? That responsibility doesn’t disappear. Someone still has to track the revenue, calculate everyone’s share, maintain accurate records, and make payments. And that someone might be YOU. Not every independent film needs a CAMA, but understanding when and why to use one can save filmmakers years of accounting headaches and potential disputes. We’re going back to Get Out to explain how it works, using a hypothetical example. #FilmFinancing #CAMA #FilmWaterfall #IndependentFilm #EntertainmentLaw

If I had to start over my Film Company here’s what I do ( no one told me) 1. Find a core team of 2-3 people that is passionate about films and build each other 2. Watch 2 movies a week and study how they create their films and mimic what I found 3. Focus on what I have around me and script out 2 short films a month based on the limited resources like Bedroom, kitchen, park etc 4. Stop waiting on the industry to pick us up and post my films BTS and results on my social media 5. Challenge myself each time and see can I create longer and quality films at least 3 times a year
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck launched Artists Equity with a simple idea: the people who help make a film successful should share in its success. Their first major film, Air, was built around a different model that aimed to reward cast and crew beyond traditional salaries. Instead of concentrating the financial upside at the top, Artists Equity focused on sharing profits with more of the people involved. The model challenged a long-standing Hollywood system where studios and executives often receive the biggest rewards while much of the crew works for fixed compensation. Damon and Affleck aren't just changing how films get made. They're questioning who deserves to benefit when a project wins. The best businesses don't just ask how to create more value. They ask how to share it with the people who created it. Follow @businessmindsai for more content like this. #business #leadership #hollywood #entrepreneurship #success
