The border of this silk crepe furoshiki is dyed first, followed by a soft kasumi (mist) gradient inside. The most important thing is to keep the amount of dye on the brush consistent every time. I dye one pair of sides at a time, always aiming for the same amount of dye in the brush. With experience, you begin to feel how much dye remains in the brush simply through the motion of removing the excess. If the brush holds more dye than the area requires, the gradient spreads farther than intended. Why does hot water make tie dye more vivid? Heat plus soda ash and the dye grabs the second it lands. No wandering, no splits, the color locks in pure right where it hit.
