Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body, vital for oxygen transport and cellular function. Low ferritin levels can lead to dermatological symptoms such as dark circles , hair thinning, brittle nails, pale or dry skin, poor wound healing, itchy skin, and increased susceptibility to skin infections and dermatitis. #anemia #irondeficiency #darkcircles #skintexture #hairthinning #hairloss #nailhealth #nails #hair #skincare #dermatitis #foryou #foryoupage #foryourpage #fyp
If you’ve ever been told your labs were “normal” but you still felt exhausted, I see you. 🩸 And to my fellow clinicians: I see you too. For years, we didn’t have clear, unified guidance on diagnosing iron deficiency. Lab reference ranges varied, cutoffs were often set too low, and many of us were left using our best clinical judgment without a standard to back it up…. Me very much included. Now we do. This week, the American Society of Hematology released its first-ever guidelines for diagnosing iron deficiency. 💬 Know someone who’s taking iron, or who is tired all the time and can’t figure out why? Share this with them. It could be the conversation that finally gets them answers. #gastroenterologist #guthealth #irondeficiency #lowiron

There’s a lot of information about ferritin out there so hopefully this helps answer some questions: You can only be iron deficient if you’re anemic. 🚫 You can be iron deficient with a completely normal hemoglobin. If my ferritin is ‘normal’ per the lab, my iron is fine.🚫 Many labs still call 15 “normal,” but the modern cutoff is under 30 for absolute deficiency, and the bar is set higher in several cases: for example, menstruating women, people with chronic disease or inflammation. Ferritin can be normal and you can still be iron deficient.✅ That’s the inflammation trap: ferritin rises with infection, illness, and chronic inflammation, so it can look reassuringly normal while usable iron is low. Always read it in context. A low ferritin is the single best marker of iron deficiency.✅ If it’s low, that’s pretty much a slam dunk. Low ferritin simply means take oral iron.🚫 Sometimes it’s that simple - menstruation, high demand states like pregnancy, or low intake like vegans and vegetarians. (GI bleeding? Get that worked up.) But with chronic inflammation, hepcidin blocks absorption in the gut, so you can take iron for months with zero improvement. If that’s you, find what’s driving the inflammation, maybe it’s gut issues, obesity, autoimmune disease, and discuss IV iron with your provider if needed. Low iron causes a lot more than fatigue.✅ Brain fog, hair shedding, restless legs, feeling cold, shortness of breath on stairs, low mood. Ferritin face is real.mostly 🚫 Trending term, not a diagnosis. Iron deficiency can show up as pallor, dull skin, hair shedding, cracked lips but it’s very non specific so just get the ferritin! #ferritin #irondeficiency #inflammation #womenshealth

💾 Save this. Then send it to the friend who’s been exhausted for two years with labs that say they’re fine. The American Society of Hematology changed the rules on Wednesday. Ferritin 30 or under = iron deficient Heavy periods? 50 or under = iron deficient For decades the bar sat at 15 And these rules diagnose it whether or not you’re anemic. A normal blood count was never the all-clear you were told it was. You can have perfect hemoglobin and nothing in the tank. ASH says up to 70% of cases get missed in high-risk groups — and they name menstruating women as one of those groups. Because nobody was screening us, and every lab was using a different number. That’s how a woman ends up exhausted for four years with a folder of labs that all say fine. Now the part I care about more than the news. 30 is where they’ll finally call it a deficiency. It is not where you feel good. It’s not where your hair grows back or where 3pm stops taking you out. In my practice I want a woman a lot higher than 30 before she feels like herself again — and nobody is going to tell her that at her physical. So if you’re under 30, that’s a doctor conversation. And if you’re in the 30s or 40s and you feel terrible, that’s a conversation too. It’s just a different one. Go find your ferritin. Then go find someone to send this to. One of three numbers I’m teaching Tuesday, 12PM CT. Free, live, no replay. 🩸 ANEMIA: When Your Blood Can’t Carry Enough Oxygen Feeling tired all the time? 😴 Getting dizzy or weak easily? Pale skin, headaches, or shortness of breath? These can be signs of anemia. Anemia occurs when your body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen effectively. ✨ Common causes: • Iron deficiency • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency • Blood loss • Chronic diseases 🥗 Support your blood health: Include iron-rich foods like leafy greens, lentils, beans, eggs, meat and fortified foods, along with vitamin C-rich foods to improve iron absorption. ⚠️ Don’t self-medicate with iron supplements. If you suspect anemia, get a CBC and appropriate medical evaluation. 💾 Save this post & share it with someone who needs to know! #Anemia #IronDeficiency #Hemoglobin #IronRichFoods #HealthAwareness Nutrition Wellness HealthyLiving PhysioVibes HealthTips
Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when there is insufficient iron to create red blood cells What to do? Red meat contains haem iron, which is readily absorbed. Non-haem iron sources may need the help of vitamin C in the form of fresh fruit or tablets. Many manufactured foods contain iron, so it is essential to read the labels. Calcium (in milk products) and tannin in tea, coffee and red wine, reduce the absorption of non-haem iron, so these should be taken several hours before a meal. Conversely, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) enhances the absorption of iron when they are taken together. #irondeficiency #anaemia #irondeficiencycheck #deficiency #dryskin #brittlehair #hair #haircare #skincare #skin #health #fyp #foryou
Comment "IRON" and we'll send you our Iron Guide, including the other blood markers you should check alongside ferritin. 🤍 Iron deficiency is rarely just about eating more iron-rich foods. Sometimes it's about absorption. Sometimes it's about choosing the right form. And sometimes, it's about asking why your ferritin isn't improving despite taking supplements. Don't settle for "normal" when you're still exhausted. Dig deeper. Your body is trying to tell you something. #irondeficiency #ironloss #indianwomen #anemic #ironsupplement
