You’re building a simple, predictable pattern: Treat in a bowl → throw one away → treat in a bowl → throw one away. To help your puppy be successful, start simple. Use just one bowl so they can clearly learn the pattern. Once they understand bowl → throw → bowl → throw, you can gradually add more. Two bowls, three, four, five. Build duration and focus over time 🥣 Want to make it more challenging? Use different sizes and shapes like plant pots, ramekins, saucers, dishes, pans. The variety encourages deeper sniffing and keeps their brain even more engaged 👃🐕 Nose work is one of the most powerful things you can do with your dog. Dogs experience the world primarily through scent. It is what they are designed to do. Sniffing: • Drains mental energy • Is hugely enriching • Helps lower arousal • Reduces stress hormones like cortisol • Promotes feel good chemicals like endorphins It is calming and regulating 🩷 Dogs are also incredible pattern spotters. Think about how quickly they learn that the doorbell predicts someone arriving. Pattern games tap into that natural ability and use it for our advantage. Predictability helps them feel safe, which lowers arousal and builds calm focus 🧠✨ Games like fetch and tug are brilliant and fun, but they can be very stimulating for puppies and result in land-sharking. This is a fantastic alternative for when you want to engage your puppy but in a way that won’t overstimulate them. #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #goldenretriever #puppytraining #dogenrichment

Mental enrichment doesn’t have to break the bank! 🧠🐾 Just 15 minutes of nosework and problem-solving can tire out a high-energy pup faster than a 30-minute walk. Using simple household items taps directly into your dog’s natural foraging instincts, building confidence and busting boredom without adding clutter to your cart. Why DIY puzzle setups work so well: ● 👃 Activates Foraging Instincts: Encourages natural sniffing behavior, which naturally lowers heart rates and promotes calm. 🧩 Builds Problem-Solving Skills: Teaches patience and persistence as they figure out how to uncover each hidden treat. ♻ Easy to Switch Up: You can constantly change the difficulty by using different household obstacles to keep them guessing. Save this idea for the next rainy day or when your pup needs a quick brain workout! 📌✨
It’s common in the industry for folks to recommend “more outlets” for nervy, overly aroused dogs. More bitework, nosework, agility, dock diving etc. which are all good outlets for dogs BUT— they do not resolve behavioral issues. At all. More activities for the dog do not get rid of anxiety, whining, inability to relax, aggression, reactivity, (insert ANY behavioral issue here) All the activities do is keep the dog in a constant state of arousal, waiting for the next “fix” of adrenaline. Now obviously we are not anti-exercise. All dogs need exercise. High drive dogs need even more. But they also need to learn how to turn drive OFF, once the fun is over. They need to learn how to settle down. Be still. And eventually just fall asleep without needing to be entertained around the clock. We work with dogs like this ALL the time. And 99.9% of the time, the dogs are getting plenty of exercise and outlets. They’ve just never been told to STOP. To stop whining, barking, pacing, etc. It’s all learned skills. Teaching dogs to chill out is actually a skillset that most dogs need to learn. And unfortunately it’s not being talked about enough. But it’s one of the biggest things we focus on in our training program for a reason. Solidk9training.com
Shaping nosework-a fun way! *There is an odor on a felt pad underneath this button* *I am NOT a professional in nosework, but I’ve found this to be a fun way to: -mentally stimulate & engage -mentally tire -imprint an odor -strengthen relationship Later-this button can be hidden completely from sight, and they learn to find it with their nose. The dispenser eventually acts as a a stimulus to “go find the odor/button”. I’ve played this inside and outside. It can be such a simple fun game for dogs. Rain especially enjoys this one. This dispenser can be found on my Amazon page. If you buy through it, it does help me a tad. If you’d like to see a live on this, let me know in the comments. . . . . #dog #mentalstimulation #rescue #fluffydog #bear

Parker and I finally finished our @fenzidogsportsacademy nosework101 class that we started ages ago and I think we’ve found her new favorite game! This is just a selection of examples of her requesting it in the past few weeks! She definitely loves to use her beagle nose. #scentwork #nosework #dogsports #aic #talkingdog #fluentpet .
