☕️ that’s my secret. I’m always drinking coffee. OBVIOUSLY, I’m not saying someone else can’t balance a full time job AND kids AND novel writing (I know authors who do this, and I’m in awe of them!) but I’m glad I’m not in that position because I don’t think my undiagnosed neurospice could handle all 3. #debutauthor #netflixdocumentary #coffee
I don’t think I realized how lonely I was writing books. It was there all along, this need for community, seen in the writing retreats I attend and even starting my company School for Writers so I could be around other writers. But at the end of the day, novel writing is a solitary process. Filmmaking is quite the opposite. Unless I want a film about inanimate objects, I literally cannot do this without other people. And that’s exactly why it’s drawing me in right now. Because we all need human connection and community. These people right here — Emily, Yaz, and Jasmin — have kept me sane, excited, and grounded as we put this film together. They’re just as excited as I am, and just as invested. As I work on building up our cast and crew, I’m asking myself two questions: 1) will they have fun, be kind, collaborative, and professional? and 2) will they have fun making imperfect art with us? That’s what I need. That’s what we all need: telling our stories in fun ways with kind people. Now more than ever.
Take my new master class on novel writing. Actually, two classes! June 9th (Novel Pitch Class) and July 23 (Starting and Finishing Novel). Sign up at the Shipman Agency website or use the link in my bio. #theamericandaughters #mauricecarlosruffin #sittinginsilence
I’m pretty convinced that this is an incredible way to “trick” yourself into writing a novel. Of course, if you know you’re doing it, you aren’t exactly tricking yourself. But still. I loved every minute of this conversation with the hilarious @ericgarciathewriter. From TV writing to screenwriting to novel writing, he’s a wealth of insight I know other authors and creatives will appreciate. So many thanks to my (unofficial) booking agent, @jordanroterauthor. Wherever would I be without you? 💕 Comment PODCAST (or link’s in bio).
The seven stages of novel writing. It ain’t pretty but it’s true. Is this your “process” too? #authorlife  #amwriting #authors #author #bookreels #bookreel #booktok #gayleforman
Comment SCRIPT and I’ll send you a link to a copy-and-paste version of this script! Reaching the editing part of novel writing can be scary... Especially if you’ve never done it before. While it’s an editor’s responsibility to give you all the information you need about their services to help you make an informed choice, there are things you can say when you reach out that will make the process efficient and clear for both parties! When you reach out to an editor to ask for information, there should be no pressure to make a decision on the spot. Inquiring is just that-inquiring! So, use this script next time you reach out to an editor (myself included!) to get the best read on whether they’re a good fit for you and your novel 🫶🏼📚 Comment SCRIPT and I’ll send you a link to a copy-and-paste version you can use:)
This is the last day of novel writing at Life at Springfield. I’d be back to Sydney tomorrow. Writing without interruptions (a luxury I don’t usually have) and a fabulous place = magic. Thank you so much @lifeatspringfield x @thestellaprize – especially to our hosts Kinchem and Peter for their hospitality. Also thanks to my great roommate/ fellow writer @mirandiriwoe for sharing the lovely house & rain memories 😉 (Bri Lee was also here but she left on my second day). One of the highlights of the residency was the labyrinth. Kinchem said: Enter the labyrinth with a question in your head and once you come out of it you will find an answer. So I went there--who knows I’d meet the Goblin King. No David Bowie, but I did find some solutions to my characters’ problems. Witchcraft! Ok, it’s more about brain stimulation than woo woo-- great to be reminded of the joy of thinking/ daydreaming while walking. Unfortunately it’s been raining since Friday so I can’t go to the labyrinth, and my characters are all sad and stuck, wet and Wuthering Heights. #fictionwritingnotes #writingresidency #lifeatspringfield
