Thoughts like - My nursing background might hurt my chances of getting into med school - Thinking I needed to be a perfect student with 4.0 and a 530 on the MCAT to be accepted! ( I had 501, 3.4 science GPA, 3.8 nursing GPA) - I don’t think I interviewed well and was worried about being awkward or saying the wrong thing. Sound familiar? 🤔 So how did I get accepted into every med school I interviewed at with all those doubts? ➡️ I envisioned myself getting accepted which helped me change my belief about being accepted, which lead to a change in my actions, feelings and lastly thoughts! Hello confidence 👏🏾 ➡️ I studied narrative interviewing skills and did practice/mock interviews with myself in the mirror. ➡️ I learned how to tell my personal and academic story in a way that left no doubt in interviewers minds that I’d fit into their program. I’m at that age where many of my peers are already attendings—some for a few years now—while I’m still in my third year of residency. It’s easy to ask “what if?” What if I had gone straight through—college, medical school, residency—no four years of active-duty Army in between? I started medical school at 26 after leaving the military, which I joined at 22 (and felt older then too, surrounded by 18-year-olds). I graduated at 30 and now I’m halfway through PGY-3. On paper, yes—I could already be an attending. But then I remember: I wasn’t the oldest in my med school class. One of my classmates was nearly 50, with an entire career behind them. And more importantly, those four years in the military were some of the best years of my life. Brotherhood like that can’t be replicated. Traveling the world, immersing myself in different cultures, learning discipline, adaptability, gratitude—those lessons shaped me far beyond medicine. I love the person those experiences molded me into. And I truly believe I can only be the physician I am today because of the path I took—not in spite of it. So how old is too old to start your medical career? I don’t think there is such a thing. I spent over a decade in critical care — ten years watching life change in seconds. Then five years in medical school. Now I’m a dermatology resident — in one of the most competitive specialties in medicine. So when I say I’ve seen the best and the worst parts of healthcare… I mean it. Here’s the real talk no one sugarcoats 👇🏾 1️⃣ Show up scared. Waiting until you “feel ready” is just fear in disguise. Every major step I’ve taken, nursing school, med school, residency, I wasn’t ready. I just showed up anyway. That’s how you grow. 2️⃣ Let go of what you think you know. When I transitioned from nursing to medicine, I had to leave behind what I thought I already knew. Not forget it, just not lead with it. Every new space is a new chance to learn, not prove yourself. 3️⃣ Drop the hierarchy mindset. The title doesn’t change the mission. I’m not “better” as a doctor than I was as a nurse. Excellence is about work ethic, humility, and how you treat people, not the letters after your name. 4️⃣ Stop confusing exhaustion with excellence. Being the “first one in, last one out” isn’t a badge of honor. If you’re staying late, do it with purpose, not because you think suffering = success. 5️⃣ Lead with grace. Medicine will humble you again and again. So give yourself and others room to be human. RNs get pushed toward the NP route so hard that many never stop to ask themselves what they actually want. NP school isn’t the default next step, and it’s not the only path. There are countless careers inside and outside of healthcare that might fit you better, NP is just one option, not THE option. Staying as an RN is also a wonderful option! Give yourself permission to explore, question, and choose the path that truly aligns with you. It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay. I don’t do it all. I get help from anyone and everyone. Screen time gets me through dinner and case prep. Early bedtimes happen when mom has a lot of studying to do…but also sometimes late bedtimes happen because mom is too busy working towards deadlines to facilitate an extended bedtime routine and we just wait until the kiddo is super tired to make it easier. Snacks sometimes count as dinner. We save what we can and don’t spend much on gifts, but when it comes to travel we don’t negotiate because experiences >>>> stuff always. My patients come first when I’m in the operating room. My kid comes first at home. Having 3 backup childcare plans is just a typical Monday. I’ve sent my kid to stay with his grandparents during tough rotations because if I don’t excel at work I won’t ever be able to provide for my son. Sleeping arrangements are fluid and my bed is always on offer because cuddles keep us sane. Dinner gets eaten as a family as much as possible but sometimes mom just needs a break. Everyone asks why I chose radiology after being a nurse. Don’t I miss patient interaction? I chose it intentionally. Yes, compensation matters and radiology is one of the highest-valued specialties for the expertise it requires. But more than that, I get to diagnose across every demographic, every organ system, every level of acuity. It’s exposure to all of medicine, without the long-term management that was never my favorite part of care. #rntomd #nursemd #medicalschool #radiology #doctorsalary
