Most people think sun damage = sunburn.
But burning is only the surface story.
āļø UVB (280ā320 nm)
Stays mostly in the epidermis.
It directly damages keratinocyte DNA and triggers inflammation.
Thatās your visible redness, heat, peeling.
š UVA (320ā400 nm)
Penetrates deeper into the dermis.
It generates reactive oxygen species and activates enzymes that break down collagen.
Thatās structural aging ā loss of elasticity, fine lines, laxity.
šµ Visible light (HEV)
Stimulates melanocytes in the basal layer.
Thatās pigmentation signaling ā especially in darker phototypes.
š Infrared (IR-A)
Reaches even deeper, contributing to heat load and oxidative stress.
Different wavelengths.
Different depths.
Different biological consequences.
This is why āI didnāt burnā doesnāt mean āmy skin is fine.ā
SPF isnāt about avoiding redness.
Itās about reducing cumulative structural stress over time.
And thatās something both estheticians and everyday skin lovers can agree on:
āļø Protect daily
āļø Reapply
āļø Think spectrum, not just sunburn
Your skin remembers what you expose it to ā even when you donāt see it immediately.

āļø Sunscreen isnāt seasonal ā itās essential every single day.
UV rays donāt take a break in winters or on cloudy days. They silently damage your skin, leading to premature ageing, wrinkles, tanning, and pigmentation.
Thatās why daily sunscreen is the most powerful anti-ageing step in your skincare routine. āØ
Protect your skin today so it thanks you tomorrowāØšŖ·

Should you get freckle tattoos?
Freckles come in two types: one type you develop when very young that often go away, and another that is due strictly to sun damage.

There are many different ways to treat concerns in dermatology. These arenāt the only way, but picking between these options, this is what I would choose.
šš»Pico laser is a great way to target individual brown/age spots.
šš»Clear & Brilliant laser is a good option for a healthy glow before and event. It helps with discoloration over time, but itās a gentle resurfacing laser that takes more treatments.
šš»Fraxel laser is my go to if I am treating many brown spots and need to reverse sun damage. Using the dual allows for treatment of fine lines and texture too.
šš»IPL is not a laser. It can treat brown and red discoloration.
šš»VBeam laser is a pulsed dye laser, it targets blood vessels. Used to treat rosacea, telangiectasias, spider angiomas and more.

Actinic purpuraāaka those mysterious purple bruises that show up on sun-exposed skin, especially the forearms š
From a dermatologistās perspective: this isnāt a bleeding disorder and itās not because youāre ābruising easily.ā Itās chronic sun damage. Years of UV exposure thin the skin and weaken the blood vessels, so even minor trauma can cause bruising.
The key players? Sun protection (yes, even on your arms), gentle skincare, and avoiding unnecessary trauma. And while creams canāt fully reverse it, supporting the skin barrier and protecting what you have does matter.
Bottom line: actinic purpura is a visible sign of cumulative sun damageāand a reminder that sunscreen isnāt just about wrinkles. āļøš§“

TCA PEEL: For Sun Damage & Texture.Ā
āØĀ Iām a big fan of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels. I do many this time of year to improve sun damage & other souvenirs of Summer fun: dull skin, fine lines, pores.
āØĀ My beautiful patient generously offered to share her healing process. Doesnāt her skin look amazing š?!
⨠While these results are typical of what many of my patients can expect, everyoneās skin is different. I tailor the type of solution, strength, and *prep* based on a thorough evaluation of each personās skin.
āØĀ If youāre considering a peel, be sure your Doctor is very experienced in treating your skin type/condition, AND discusses pre- and post-care instructions with you.

⨠How to apply sunscreen āØ
ā
Itās good practise to wear sunscreen everyday regardless of the UV index or the time of the year
ā
Should you wear it indoors? IMO yes, especially if youāre sitting near a window and because realistically even if you are at home you may pop out to the car/to put the rubbish etc so no harm
ā
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon is enough for you face & neck, thatās approx 2-3 finger lengths
ā
Donāt forget to protect your ears and the backs of your hands as these are common sites for sun damage and skin cancer!
