1997 Vauxhall Vectra ‘Super Touring’ - ex-works Cleland/Warwick BTCC car - totally original, restored, and ready to run
Super Touring was a category of Touring Car racing introduced in 1991, designed to give Touring Cars a new injection of life and relevance. Almost immediately, Super Touring conquered the international motor sport scene, spreading across Europe, USA, Australasia, and Asia.
It was the era that brought us some of the most iconic tin-top battles in history, with rivalries that Touring Car racing had never seen… and still hasn’t! It was the class that bought us the legendary Soper/Cleland Silverstone clash in 1992 and the bonkers TWR-built Volvo 850 Estate, and within just a few short years, manufacturers were employing championship-winning Formula 1 Teams to build and develop their cars…and budgets were hitting over £10m! It really was the golden age of Touring Car racing, where fans could truly relate to the “slammed” but recognisable shapes on track… the purest form of “win on Sunday, sell on Monday”. Huge live audiences visited the races, and even bigger numbers watched at home.

Born to Win: BMW 3.0 CSL
Introduced in May 1972, the 3.0 CSL was a homologation special built to make the car eligible for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. 1,265 were built.
The "L" in the designation meant leicht (light), unlike in other BMW designations, where it meant lang (long). The lightness was achieved by using thinner steel to build the unit body, deleting the trim and soundproofing, using aluminium alloy doors, bonnet, and boot lid, and using Perspex side windows. The five hundred 3.0 CSLs exported to the United Kingdom were not quite as light as the others, as the importer had insisted on retaining the soundproofing, electric windows, and stock E9 bumpers on these cars. The CSL was not sold in the United States.
Big shout out to our main man, Jayesh from @classiccardiaries for presenting this fine automobile at the meet today. #BMW #ClassicCars
Picture pit lane at Spa gone completely dark except for what spills out of the garage windows, rain coming down steady enough to turn the tarmac into a mirror. These 3.0 CSLs line up nose to tail waiting their turn, Castrol and Gitanes liveries throwing reflections everywhere, headlights cutting through the mist like they're about to roll out for a real touring car grid instead of a historic demonstration. Somebody in a hi-vis jacket waves the next car forward, taillights glowing red in the wet, and for a second it doesn't feel like a recreation at all, it feels like 1976 never ended. 🌧️

🔧 A bit of history: These are BMW 3.0 CSLs, the homologation specials built from 1971 to 1975 to give BMW a fighting chance in Group 2 touring car racing, earning the nickname "Batmobile" for their aggressive front spoiler, fender flares, and towering rear wing. Privateer teams like BMW Luigi, run by Belgian driver Jean-Claude Malcher's outfit backed by sponsors like Castrol and Gitanes, campaigned these cars across Europe through the 1970s, going wheel to wheel with Ford Capris and Porsches for European Touring Car Championship honors. Seeing them lined up in the wet at Spa, a circuit they actually raced at during the era, is about as close as it gets to time travel. 🏁

Cars are more than just a chunk of metal. They’re a companion, and they’ll allow you to experience things and places that no commercial travel will ever allow you to experience. #cheapcartours #roadtrip #fiattoferrari

Daydream how Volvos used to look. What do you think of the 1970s Volvo 1800E?
Interesting History
The initial series known as the P1800 was assembled by Jensens Motors in England until 1963. The car had an Italian style influence and was designed by Frua (one of the Italian studios). However their intern, Pelle Peterson (Swedish) was the one tasked with drawing up the designs. Volvo switched assembly to Sweden after 1963 & renamed it the 1800 S (S for Sweden). The car oozed such dynamic styling that it was the lead car in the English crime series “The Saint” for Roger Moore who played Simon Templar & was the first registered owner of the 1800 S. In 1969 car production was also transferred to Sweden from the UK. In 1970 the last coupe, 1800 E benefited from four-wheel disc brakes & an B20E engine with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection to produce 130bhp. The car reached a top speed at 118 mph on a economical 2 litre engine & 0-60 mph in around 9 seconds, which was rather splendid at the time. Volvo’s last car in the series was the 1800 ES (estate car).
