Baja California Sur and Egypt are both arid, desert dominated regions where agriculture relies heavily on oasis style irrigation and, notably, the cultivation of date palms. While Egypt is centered on the massive Nile River, providing expansive fertile silt for staples like wheat and barley, Baja Sur relies on smaller aquifers, oases, and monsoonal summer rains.
Both regions sustain life through date palm cultivation, a staple crop in both Egyptian oases and Baja’s desert environments. Egypt traditionally grew wheat, barley, flax, and papyrus, while Baja produces dates, citrus, and vegetables in specific fertile oasis pockets. Here in La Purísima I’ve always felt a world away, sitting along the riverbank under a cool shade of the descendants of Moroccan date palms.
