Advocating for my nonverbal autistic son is also a full time job. I realize that anytime I get too comfortable, the mama bear claws are tested and I have to march to my son’s district with all the legal terminology I learned from hours of endless googling and researching from other advocates and parents who are a seasoned in this area and have lived through many different phases of this autism journey. Today, I made sure my district heard my concerns about my son’s NPS (non public school) placement. The moral of the story, always go with your gut. Our children can’t outwardly say if something bad is happening but their change of behavior and your hypersensitivity is always communicating. Today’s meeting with my son’s district made me realize that my hyper vigilance is a blessing. I find if I’m not a squeaky wheel who is in constant communication with my son’s team, then my son falls through the cracks. It’s exhausting. But this blessing of my keen senses to understand all my son’s nonverbal cues is what keeps me from giving up. So here’s some encouragement, advocate even if it’s for the smallest accommodations. Motherhood in its nature is incredibly difficult but that of raising a child with special needs or on the ASD as in my case has intrinsically changed everything about what I had thought this journey would be. ————————— As a single mother navigating the diagnosis, I’m not afraid to admit that I am often anxious, depressed, stressed and emotionally burnt out. Today is one of those days when I feel most vulnerable about my reality even though I know that someday it’ll be better. That huge smile just made my heart beam from the inside out 😊 For the next four years, Dylan will be going to a postsecondary school here in our city that meets the needs of students with exceptionalities by teaching them skills to obtain employment and live independently. We went to the school on a visit in November and the way my baby just jumped right in with the other students, talking and laughing, asking questions unprompted, I knew this was the school for him. ☺️ There are certain things you have to adjust to as a parent with autism, expectations and experiences that you have to learn to let go. The idea of going to a traditional college was one of those for us. While there are programs and some colleges and universities around the country that meet the needs of students with certain exceptionalities, those weren’t right for Dylan’s needs. The main reason is that Dylan doesn’t even like school lol. So it didn’t make sense for him to go to a specialized program in a college when he is not interested in the academics.
