Sometimes family isn't determined by blood or even by species, it is the love in our hearts that unites us.💚🦫 Yesterday I re-shared one of my favorite videos of Bo first asking me to swim with her, and already there are hundreds of comments saying "get in the water woman!!!" so I just wanted to reassure everyone that the icy cold did not keep us apart🥰🦫 A year later, Bo and I swim almost every day. in our theme this week of fun facts you probably didn't know about beavers, did you know they sound like a grumpy toddler when you try to take their pumpkin away? 🧡🦫 If you are new here, this is Bo the beaver. Bo is a non-releasable educational ambassador here at Wild For Life Inc., which means she has certain privileges and duties as a part of her job title as branch manager. Today she assigned herself the duty of pumpkin taste tester. 😃 Bo has a lot of jobs and titles here at the rescue, but one title we do not call her is "pet". Whenever we post cute videos like this, there's the inevitable comments "how do you get a pet beaver" and "I want beaver as a pet" But Bo is not a pet. she is a wild animal who was born in the wild, but because of illness and injury can no longer live in the wild unassisted, so now she has an important and also heavily regulated job to do. To allow Bo to legally stay with us and inspire and educate people about her species, we had to obtain both state and federal licenses, and a declaration from a veterinarian that she was non-releasable. Some of the criteria that we follow includes: • She participates in at least 12 educational programs each year. • She can only travel under official permits and approved conditions. • Visitors can’t touch or handle her, this keeps both Bo and people safe. • She doesn’t go on vacations or casual outings. • She can’t be bred, sold, or rehomed, she’ll only ever live with permitted caretakers. • Her care is inspected and documented by state and federal agencies. • She has contingency plans in place to ensure her well being in cases of a natural disaster (a good idea for any animal caretaker to have, but a very detailed document is required for Bo) • regular vet visits are required to be documented and reports submitted. • her housing is USDA inspected and random visits and site inspections occur regularly. This little bit of sunshine these past few days has us all dreaming of summertime💛🦫☀️ In the wild, beavers survive the harsh winter by preparing long ahead of time and building a cozy lodge made out of mud and sticks, with an underwater entrance that they must diligently keep clear of ice to avoid being trapped inside. All winter long they swim out of their lodge under the ice to their underwater pantry. During the late summer and early fall they stock their pantry by submerging and weaving together like poplar and willow branches and other food sources that will sustain them until spring. Bo is very happy that she doesn't have to do any of that, as she does not like to get snow on her flippers. Today was one of the first days I could coax her out of the beaver barn, and she was quite disappointed to find that even though it was sunny her pond was still quite frozen. Don't worry Bo, we just have to have patience a little bit longer, warmer days are on their way! 💛🦫 #bothebeaver #wildliferescue #wildforlifeinc #beaver

That tiny (not so tiny anymore) tail has been through so much, and has a very important tale to tell 💚🦫 I still cannot believe that the day she was rescued she fit in the palm of my hand🥹 and how much our lives have changed since then. Bo and Archer enjoying a strawberry as a special treat🍓🦫 One of the perks of being a wild beaver kit in rehabilitation is that you get to eat strawberries out of season, and don't have to face the brutal -13°F temperatures outside right now🥶 my favorite part about this video is Bo showing off her beautiful bright orange teeth! 🧡 A beaver's teeth turn bright orange as they age due to an iron rich enamel that makes them super strong on the front side, allowing them to wear down into a sharp chisel shape. It's an incredible adaptation that is also present in porcupines, allowing both species to easily strip the bark off of trees, and for beavers to chew right through a tree trunk with ease. #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferehab #wildliferescue #beaver #animalrescue #bothebeaver #wildforlifeinc #animalfacts #beaverfacts
