I kept seeing bright red bracelets, carvings, and ornaments all over China, and at first I assumed they were all made from the same material. 🇨🇳
Then in Furong Village, I came across a rough piece of what is believed to be Chicken blood stone, an ornamental material coloured by Cinnabar, a vivid red mercury sulfide mineral that was historically used to produce the pigment vermilion. ❤️🏘️
It was interesting to finally see the rough material behind the red ornaments commonly sold in markets, especially knowing that cinnabar has long been valued for its intense colour in carvings and decorative pieces. 🪨
Not every red bracelet or pendant sold as “cinnabar” is natural, as many are made from resin or composite materials designed to imitate the same bright red appearance.
Seeing the rough material in person made the whole experience even more interesting, because it shows how much mineralogy can hide behind something as simple as a red ornament. 🧮

🔥This cinnabar-coated selenite crystal cluster, sourced from Bijia Mountain Antimony Mine in Weishan, Yunnan, is a stunning assemblage formed in a low-temperature hydrothermal vein. The transparent to translucent selenite crystals present a platy habit with glossy, clear faces. Vivid crimson cinnabar coats them in thin, delicate films and also penetrates just beneath the surface of the selenite, tinting the crystals with rich, multi-tonal red hues. In places, distinct cinnabar crystal striations are visible, creating a striking contrast of color and texture against the clear selenite. Stibnite crystals are visible at the base of the specimen, confirming that the entire cluster grew upon a stibnite matrix, forming a classic low-temperature hydrothermal paragenetic sequence. The entire cluster boasts a complete, well-defined structure and distinct layering, making it a top-tier specimen of its kind.

Toxic Yet Iconic Meet Real Cinnabar from Monte Amiata @zecchicolorifirenze. #zecchi #luisborreroart #cinnabar #historicalpihment #painting
“Okay, if you love Old Money style with a little world-traveler mystery… look at this ring.
This rich, velvety red carving is in the cinnabar tradition—a style that comes from China and dates back over two thousand years. And here’s the fun part: most pieces like this aren’t carved from a red stone. They’re made from layered lacquer, tinted to that iconic cinnabar red, then hand-carved once it hardens.
In Chinese culture, this red isn’t just pretty—red symbolizes good fortune, protection, and joy. Cinnabar was also historically linked to longevity and was believed to ward off negativity, which is why you’ll often see it used on symbolic objects, not just decorative ones.
The carving style feels almost like a seal—and that’s intentional. Scholar’s seals were used to stamp documents, and this design nods to that world of tradition, status, and meaning.
So when you wear a ring like this, you’re not just wearing a statement piece—you’re wearing a little piece of history, symbolism, and craftsmanship… in the most dramatic red.
If you want this beauty, you know where to find it… on the website at themarialvacollection.com.”

Mined since the Neolithic Age, cinnabar is a bright scarlet mineral, not dissimilar in appearance to Quartz, commonly found in areas of volcanic activity or in the vicinity of alkaline hot springs. It has been prized for its decorative qualities since antiquity and used for a wide variety of purposes from Europe to the Far East.

I’ve been foraging cinnabar chanterelles, often known as red chanterelles for quite some time now! 🧡 🍄🌈
Though smaller and slightly less delectable than their larger, more famous cousins, cinnabar chanterelles are edible and quite delicious in their own way.
One of the essential identification features for all chanterelles and related species is that they lack true gills. While some species are smooth-sided, many (including the cinnabar chanterelle) will have a network of "false gills".
Cinnabar chanterelles are found in early summer to early fall mushrooms. And I dry sautéed them in my cast iron with some potatoes.
P.S. I love Shrek lol
