A is for the alphabetic principle. Children need to understand that letter symbols are connected to the sounds of our language. The alphabetic principle is understanding the systematic and predictable relationship of letters and sounds. Let’s think of it this way...as babies begin to learn that a cow says “moo” or a cat says “meow” they begin to make a strong connection between what a cow looks like - horns, tail, spots, ears, long eyelashes, 4 legs and the sound it makes, “moo”. Our alphabet letters are just the same - they are made up of specific lines, curves, dots, diagonal lines, etc. Not only are there 26 letter shapes, English has 44 speech sounds and they can also be combined to make up dozens of more phonograms. That’s why it’s so important to start making those sound-symbol connections - let’s strengthen the neurons by playing with sounds and how they connect with the visual representation of our language.
