I had to do it again in celebration of finding all three species of Brood X. Many folks don’t know that brood X contains three species, Magicicada septendecim, Magicicada cassinii, and Magicicada septendecula. Today is up there for the most cicadas I’ve seen in one location and pristine habitat. I spent the morning with friends sitting in a river watching the cicadas flying all around us and often ending up on our persons. It was one of those moments that I’ll keep till 17 years from now when Brood X emerges again. Oh, I also got to see a Louisiana Waterthrush eat a few cicadas, the best bird species I’ve seen eating them, in my opinion.
There’s a buzz about this #wildlifewednesday, which celebrates the magical, mysterious periodical cicada. These noisy insects emerge en masse from the ground every 13 or 17 years, depending on the brood. And Marylanders with fond memories of the 2021 emergence of Brood X might not need to wait until 2038 to witness this bizarre phenomenon once again. Right now Brood XIX — the Great Southern Brood — should be making an appearance in a small pocket of southern St. Mary’s County. Let us know if you’ve seen them! Or else, to enjoy cicadas from the comfort of home, check out our story about the 2021 emergence online free — click the link in bio and watch full episodes to check out episode 3302. #periodicalcicada #cicada #broodx #broodxix #molting #marylandwildlife #outdoorsmaryland #magicicada
Every 13 years, Brood XIX, which is comprised of 4 different species in the Magicicada genus, emerges from the ground at once in overwhelming volume. There are so many cicadas emerging at once that predators can have their fill, and the remaining cicadas are free to reproduce in peace.
Periodical cicadas emerging is an interesting event that only happens every 17 years. I managed to find two blue eyed versions in 2021. #magicicada #blueeyedcicada #redeyecicada #periodicalcicada #magicicadacassini #annualcicada #cicadas #insects #entomology #bugs #animals #wildlife
Periodical cicadas, such as those in the genus *Magicicada*, have evolved remarkable 13- and 17-year life cycles, likely as a survival strategy to evade predators through both long underground development and prime-numbered emergence intervals that reduce the chances of synchronization with predator populations. These life cycles emerged during the Pleistocene, when glacial events isolated cicada populations, leading to the divergence of multiple broods and the evolution of distinct species groups. By emerging in enormous numbers, periodical cicadas overwhelm predators through sheer volume—a strategy known as predator satiation—ensuring enough survive to reproduce. This unusual life history, governed by a precise genetic clock triggered by environmental cues like soil temperature, makes periodical cicadas a unique and striking example of evolutionary adaptation. BROOD X has started! Drop any cicada questions you may have! This spring, millions of periodical cicadas will emerge from their burrows underground and come out in unison for the next few weeks. They will molt into winged adults by the cover of night, and then hang on the trees to harden their exoskeleton, flying away by morning. After waiting 17 years, Brood X is finally ready to emerge and reproduce. There will be millions of 17 year cicadas all of May into June, representing three species which will all be found in 15 states on the East Coast. Get ready to see some cicadas all around you and hear them in the trees. The birds will benefit the most, but all other wildlife that feeds on insects is going to seriously benefit from this huge event of mass emergence! Be sure to get outside to see these insects if you are on the East coast! Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are just some of the states about to be absolutely covered in cicadas! More posts to come about these lovely red eyed beauties.
The Magicicada tredecim emerges every 13 years apparently. Lays eggs in cracks in trees, then they fall to the ground burrow to the roots on the trees, live under ground for 13 years come out, breed, die and the process is repeated. Pretty neat. #cicada #bug #cool
By now, many you have heard of the Brood X cicadas. Emerging in countless quantities, these 17 year periodical insects from the genus Magicicada made a huge boom across Eastern America. Their songs, ringing all around the country as well. Now, the adult life cycle is coming to a close and this generation has begun to pass away. However, trillions of eggs have been layed and in just a month or two, these tiny babies will come tumbling down from the trees and jump back into the soil for another 17 years.
