Ever seen history stitched before your eyes? In 2024, the Historical Clothing & Textiles Department undertook a remarkable project: the creation of two 17th-century mantua mock ups. Researched, cut, and stitched in view of Museum guests, these garments represent an expansion of the Museum’s storytelling, moving beyond the 1620s and into the 1670s, while also illuminating the story of Pilgrim Elizabeth Warren in her later years as a widow, landowner, and respected figure in Plymouth Colony. Learn more about this project, and watch the full video, in our most recent blog post. Thank you to everyone who visited our exhibition “Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated, 1550-1700”. Yesterday, our conservation team deinstalled the 16th century dalmatic that was on view, removing it from its display case and transferring it to a special box for transport in advance of being placed in its permanent housing for long-term storage. One of the highlights of the exhibition, the dalmatic was recently restored thanks to a grant from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network (@theghhn)
I’m finally making the dress after a year of collecting textile accessories along the River Thames. I wanted some old-style pieces to add to it, and now that my mudlark finds have grown, I’m getting everything ready. I’m super excited to turn it into a costume. ☺️ #mudlark #fashionhistory #artist #mudlarking #textiles a

🪡How re-enactors are spending their next weekends 🧵 Re-enactors know the struggle… one garment started, 3 other projects in the back of your head and suddenly an approaching deadline... 🧵 Who else is sewing for the next event? Paused project: a doublet for @ruudgvh Thank you for extending the deadline! 🙈 Next deadline: a lecture about late medieval fashion for @archeonmuseumpark 🥳 #historicalfashion #reenactment #livinghistory #historicalcostume #woolfabric
Spent the weekend inside an 18th-century mantua maker’s shop at the New-York Historical Museum . We made a gown using period methods, cutting to the body, hand stitching, public fittings. No patterns. No standard sizes. Historically, these shops included apprentices, hired workers, indentured servants and enslaved women trained as skilled seamstresses. What better way to close out Black History Month and step into Women’s History Month than honoring the labor of the women who shaped fashion history? #historicalcostuming #fashionhistory #blackhistory #womenshistorymonth #sewing

One of the most frequent questions I get from you guys are about my favourite sewing tools- so today a glimpse behind my fab turners! Yes, you can also turn on a. Bit of string/ use that too but that is not a tool. So narrow loop turners as well as bigger ones/ and my absolute must/ the fabric tubes :-). I use these for rouleaux, ties, belts, cravats, etc Which one do you use? #priorattire #historicalcostuming #sewing #sewingtechniques #dressmaking
