I call this one the hunchback. Paddling on a p-erg, people can sometimes develop bad habits trying to get higher numbers. Having a rounded back may start off well, by giving a tiny bit more reach and lots of resistance at the catch....but it will actually give you lower numbers over the duration of your piece (or erg test). Here's why: 1 - it throws off the sequence of events - instead of pulling the paddle back with your hips and shoulders, you end up pushing it back with your upper body and arms. A pull is a stronger, more sustainable motion. 2 - the path of the paddle is flawed - instead of a straight pull motion from the front of the stroke to the back, you end up having a motion that looks like a smile...it starts high, then dips down before coming back up at the end of the stroke. 3 - reduced lung capacity - with a straight back, you're able to get a lot more oxygen into those lungs, allowing you to sustain your power for longer. 4 - you get caught at the exit with less power - the end of your stroke is spent sitting back up instead of applying pressure at the exit. With a straight back, you are able to focus on starting to move forward into your next stroke. It gives you more leverage, and it allows you to stay stronger for longer. Hope this helps!
