I visited Phoenix for a couple days this week on my Spring Break, and after getting to have my face melted off Tuesday night by @zakkwyldebls @dariolorina @johnjddeservio & @jefffabb at the BLS show, all I wanted to do was play my guitar. I was really moved by their tribute to Dime & Vinnie Paul during the show - it caught me off guard, but in a really cool way. And I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So when I walked up to the @guitarcenter that was across the street from our hotel the next morning & saw a poster of Dime in the window, I knew it was a sign that I needed to go in. And then after looking at all of the new guitars, when I turned around and saw this Dean hanging in the Used section, I got goosebumps & couldn’t wait to play it. Yesterday 3/11 would have been Vinnie Paul’s 62nd birthday - he was a year younger than what my dad would be if he were alive today too. So, yesterday in the Phoenix Guitar Center, this little jam was for them - for Dime, for Vinnie Paul & for my Dad, Tim Watson 🤘 Godspeed. 🎬 To create the look of speaking out of one side of his mouth, Joaquin Phoenix worked with his dentist to attach small metal pieces to his teeth. They were originally fitted with rubber bands meant to help keep his mouth slightly clenched, but the bands didn’t really hold, so he eventually removed them. Still, the metal pieces themselves, along with the discomfort they caused, were enough to constantly remind him of the character’s physical habits. That small but persistent irritation helped him stay in character and maintain that tense, uneven way of speaking throughout the performance.

when you’re in the parking lot and hear chris cornell and eddie vedder jamming live... this was phoenix, 1992. while ice cube was on the main stage, eddie vedder and chris cornell decided to hop on a tiny side stage to play “hunger strike.” it was so loud and raw that people still walking in from the parking lot thought someone was just blasting the temple of the dog record from their trunk. they didn’t realize it was actually the two biggest voices in rock standing a few feet away from a lucky group of fans who happened to be in the right place. the best part about this ‘92 era was how unpolished the logistics were. after they finished, eddie didn’t have a security detail or a backstage escort—he just jumped off the stage and tried to walk toward a side gate like a normal guy. he got mobbed by fans immediately. this was that exact window in time where these guys were becoming global icons but still tried to act like they were just local seattle musicians. #chriscornell #eddievedder #musichistory #grunge #90srock
