Plastic packaging is getting ridiculous! If it feels impossible to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in your weekly groceries, that’s because it is! Plastics found in grocery stores include pouches, bags and wraps, which are very difficult to reuse and are not recycled in Canada. Even though consumers are more eco-aware than ever, grocery corporations are introducing more plastic packaging than ever. In a survey of 54 Canadian grocery retailers, @envirodefence found the following: 🛒 64% of all surveyed products are packaged in plastic 🍐 71% of produce is packaged in plastic with only 27% available #packagefree 🥦 Prices of whole fruits and vegetables were *cheaper* when pre-packed vs loose 🍼 76% of items in the baby food aisle are packaged in #singleuseplastic So what can you do? Bringing your own bags and containers where possible is a great place to start, but this isn’t up to individual behaviours. Tell your local grocery retailer to phase out unnecessary plastic packaging, scale up return and reuse programs, and introduce refill stations. The federal government must also act to ban non-recyclable packaging and urgently address and regulate chemicals used in food packaging materials. There is so much to loathe about these seemingly innocent little plastic produce stickers. They are a constant source of frustration for all compost creators, as it’s close to impossible to be entirely vigilant with removing them. They turn up in your compost months after they’ve been accidentally added, & because they’re made of plastic, they will continue to hang around for centuries to come. Since the 1950s, 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic has been produced & over 80 per cent of it has ended up in landfills or discarded into the environment. Fruit stickers may seem like a minor inconvenience, but when you think about the amount of single use plastic that is created by them the mind boggles. Almost every single piece of fruit & many veggies we buy from supermarkets here in Australia has a sticker on them. Can you imagine how many of these stickers we mindlessly dump into the earth each day. So, here’s your reminder to remove all stickers when unpacking produce. Over 130 billion pounds of food are wasted in the US each year! Preventing food waste at home helps decrease the amount of food sent to the landfill (where it can’t decompose properly). One of the easiest ways to limit food waste at home is making sure food is stored in a way that will help it last longer, which ultimately helps save money!
