Approximately 8.5 percent of the global population currently lives in extreme poverty, according to the World Bank's latest report, Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet 2024: Pathways Out of the Polycrisis. This translates to around 692 million people surviving on less than $2.15 per person per day. While this marks significant progress compared to the 37.9 percent in 1990, the rate of improvement has slowed considerably. The decade from 2020 to 2030 is at risk of becoming a "lost decade" due to various overlapping challenges, including sluggish economic growth, increased fragility, climate risks, and heightened uncertainty. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest concentration of people living in poverty. The Middle East and North Africa are the only regions where extreme poverty is increasing.Elsewhere, poverty levels are either stagnating or declining slowly. #statista #infographics #empoweringpeoplewithdata
If the future feels blurry lately, you’re not alone...we’re living through what researchers call a polycrisis, multiple global crises colliding at once and it’s making it harder for people to imagine their future. The antidote to this feeling is action! Even small, collective action reminds your brain that the future isn’t gone, it’s still being built. So head to our link in bio to start taking actions today 🫶 #Polycrisis #CollectiveAction #Futures #Foresight
Donald Trump is a unique threat - but the global polycrisis didn’t begin with this administration. From the exploitation of the Global South to the genocide of Palestinians, we are witnessing collapse rooted in an ideology that transcends party lines. Neoliberalism teaches us that freedom is found in consumption. But yoga offers a different path - one of discernment, truth-telling, and collective liberation. Yoga asks us to see and speak the truth even when it doesn’t fit into neat political boxes. Join us in that truth tonight. Reminder: The Swaraj Masterclass is happening tonight. Reclaim inner and outer freedom. Comment “SWARAJ” self rule - to join us in truth and ritual. 👇🏽✨ #yogawebinar #yogaethics
We need a reset. Today as I addressed the United Nations General Assembly, I made it clear that for four years, we, the people of the world, have endured the effects of a polycrisis. We’ve had to grapple with the Climate Crisis, the legacy of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and now multiple theaters of war across the globe. As citizens of the world, we are facing the rising cost of living, a silent pandemic of Antimicrobial Resistance, and increasing death from Non-Communicable Diseases. The time to pause and reset is NOW. As we launch the Bridgetown Initiative 3.0, we recognise now is the time for change. We cannot afford the distraction of conflict while the world suffers. The future of our people and planet depends on it.
For many people reading this, the crises we discuss on this podcast – from ecological instability to financial collapse – often feel like a distant problem in the future. But for the youth of today, managing the impact of these situations will define most of their lives, and many have already dedicated their careers to mitigating the worst outcomes. What do the leading young voices envision for the future, and what are they doing today to make that a reality? In this episode, I'm joined by Indigenous environmental justice activist and Planetary Guardian, Xiye Bastida, to discuss how her Indigenous heritage and leadership in the youth climate movement have helped guide her to continue her work toward a more ecologically attuned world. Together, we discuss the importance of intergenerational collaboration rooted in love, rather than simply rage or blind hope. Importantly, Xiye emphasizes what could become possible if we change our definition of what success looks like, live closer to the Earth, and start to view our planet as a sacred teacher, rather than a well of resources from which to extract. 👀 Watch the full episode on YouTube 🎧 Listen on Apple, Spotify, and more 📚 Join our Substack 👉 Links for all in bio #thegreatsimplification #polycrisis #climate #environment
We the people… got work to do. And joy to spread. The way out of this polycrisis isn’t more fear—it’s more imagination, more connection, and a bigger “we.” That’s what I shared at @bioneers and what we’re building with How To Citizen. In this clip, I break down the four principles of how to citizen—as a verb—and remind us of the power of story. Because the stories we tell shape the world we build. 🎥 Starting Monday, we’re dropping a new story every day for our #HowWeCitizen Story Sprint—real people, real action, real interdependence. Today’s post is a taste. Stay tuned for more from @howtocitizen and @thecitizensguy 👆🏾 Hit the link in bio for the full Bioneers keynote. Let’s citizen like we mean it.
The world is in polycrisis. Conflicts, climate change, and misinformation have exacerbated the challenges to global health. Multilateral health institutions are under strain. At the 2nd APIC-ADVA Asia Pacific Summit on Infectious Diseases and Immunisation, I emphasised three ways in which we must strengthen our global health defences: 1️⃣ Reinforcing multilateral health institutions to tackle future crises 2️⃣ Reaffirming trust in science & evidence-based collaboration 3️⃣ Building resilient domestic healthcare systems and a strong healthcare workforce The next global health crisis is not a matter of if, but when. To be ready, we must act swiftly and collectively—because no country can fight pandemics alone. Regional and global cooperation remain our strongest defence.
On leading with love. As protectors and defenders on the frontlines of the climate crisis, addressing the polycrisis of our times must start with centering and uplifting Indigenous wisdom and knowledge. At our gathering with @twenty_summers, Indigenous activist and model @quannah.rose, who is Hän Gwich’in and from the Sičangu and Oglala Lakota Tribes, discusses what it takes to open hearts and minds. The Work That Reconnects // I wasn't sure whether to share this but what the heck - my slightly rambling thoughts immediately after coming off my first zoom session for The Work That Reconnects last night. I have loved participating in this work myself and have no doubt of the value it would bring to others who want to explore their role within the climate crisis / poly crisis. I really want to help to build connection and action within my local community. Whilst I know many people working and acting within this arena, my ongoing struggle is figuring out how to find and connect with people who are wanting to step into this work but are unsure where to start. Let me know if this is you 💚
