Three stakes. Every golf course. 🔴🟡⚪
Most golfers only know ONE of them.
Here’s everything you need to know
about all three — per the USGA 👇
—
⚪ WHITE STAKE — Out of Bounds
This is the boundary of the golf course.
You have ONE option only:
→ Return to where you last played from
→ Re-hit under stroke AND distance penalty
→ That’s +1 stroke AND you lose distance
No exceptions. No alternatives.
Just pain. 😬 Some courses offer a LOCAL RULE allowing a 2 stroke penalty drop near where your ball went OB! Always check your scorecard or pro shop before assuming this applies ⛳
—
🟡 YELLOW STAKE — Penalty Area
Typically marks water or areas
the course wants protected.
You have THREE options:
✅ Play it as it lies — no penalty
(if you can reach it)
✅ Stroke and distance — go back
to where you last played, re-hit
+1 stroke penalty
✅ Back on the line relief — find where
your ball last crossed the yellow line,
draw an imaginary line back through
that point to the flag, drop anywhere
on that line as far back as you like
+1 stroke penalty
—
🔴 RED STAKE — Penalty Area
Same as yellow PLUS one extra option:
✅ Play it as it lies — no penalty
✅ Stroke and distance — same as yellow
✅ Back on the line — same as yellow
✅ LATERAL RELIEF — drop within TWO club lengths of where your ball last crossed the red line
Must be no closer to the hole
+1 stroke penalty
—
Quick summary 👇
⚪ WHITE = 1 option (brutal)
🟡 YELLOW = 3 options (manageable)
🔴 RED = 4 options (most flexible)

Birdies come from wedges.
Not miracles.
Scratch golfers attack when dispersion allows it.
Mid handicaps attack because “why not.”
Comment TRIBE if par 5s get greedy.
Most golfers think scoring happens on par 5s.
But if you look at your scorecard, most holes you play are par 4s.
If you can lower your scoring average on par 4s even a little, your handicap can drop quickly.
1. Tee Shot Position
Distance matters. Data from the PGA Tour shows that the closer you are to the green, the easier the hole becomes. So if your driver miss still keeps the ball in play, you should absolutely use it and get the ball as close to the green as possible.
The problem is many golfers hit driver even on holes where the miss brings big trouble into play. Water, out of bounds, or heavy trees can quickly turn a small miss into a double bogey.
A better strategy is having options off the tee. Driver when the miss is safe. But on tighter holes, a 3 wood, hybrid, or long iron that finds the fairway can make the hole much easier. The goal is simple. Get the ball as close to the green as possible while keeping it in play.
2. Smarter Approach Shots
Many golfers attack every flag on par 4s. Even from 160 or 180 yards. That sounds aggressive, but those shots rarely produce birdies. They often lead to bunkers, short sided chips, and tough up and downs.
A better play is often aiming for the middle of the green. That keeps you away from the biggest trouble. When you start leaving yourself 20 or 30 foot putts instead of recovery shots, pars become much easier and doubles disappear.
3. Wedge Control Inside 120 Yards
Most real scoring chances on par 4s happen inside 120 yards. Yet many golfers spend most of their practice time hitting driver instead of learning how to control wedges.
If you can control distance from 100 yards and in, you’ll start giving yourself real birdie chances instead of scrambling to save par. Knowing your wedge distances and having a repeatable swing for those yardages can change your scoring quickly.
This is something I go much deeper into inside the New Nine Golf School, where I break down how to practice the shots that actually lower scores.
If you want a great place to start, comment “practice” and I’ll send you my free 60 minute practice guide so you know exactly what to work on next time you go to the range.
Are 16-18 at TPC Sawgrass the BEST finishing stretch in golf?? @theplayers 36-hole leader thinks it is.

Ever notice a ball sitting just past the hole while someone else is putting?
Under USGA Rule 15.3b – Ball Helping Play, if a ball on the putting green might help another player’s stroke, it must be marked and lifted.
That means a ball sitting near the cup can’t be left there as a backstop to stop someone’s putt.
And in stroke play, players cannot agree to leave the ball there to help.
Golf rewards skill — not bumpers.
Penalty: General penalty (2 strokes in stroke play)

Sandbagging tactic or a legit way to track handicap?
😳 Allegations of violence involving a par 3 and a pin at Sandhill Crane Golf Club today‼️
Details are still developing, but sources confirm:
• Club did the talking
• Flag took the beating
• Birdie entered into evidence
Act like you expected it. 😤

Par 4 stats every serious golfer should understand if they actually want to lower their handicap:
1️⃣ Most Double Bogeys Happen on Par 4s
Par 4s make up the majority of the course. They’re also where most amateurs blow up.
Miss the fairway. Miss the green. Chunk a chip. Two-putt. That’s a double without doing anything crazy.
If you simply eliminate doubles on Par 4s, your scoring average drops fast. Par 4 discipline is handicap control.
2️⃣ GIR Percentage on Par 4s Is Lower Than You Think
Mid handicaps often hit only 30 to 40 percent of Par 4 greens.
High handicaps are often under 20 percent.
That means most Par 4s require a chip and two putts just to make bogey. If your short game isn’t sharp, Par 4s will eat you alive.
The real improvement lever is wedges and putting, not just swinging driver harder.
3️⃣ The Real Separator Is 125 to 175 Yards
Most approach shots into Par 4s fall in this range.
The scoring gap is created by proximity and dispersion control from mid-iron distances. Hit more fairways. Control your numbers. Avoid short-siding yourself.
That’s where birdie chances and stress-free pars come from.
If you want to actually fix this, comment practice and I’ll send you my free 60-minute practice plan that covers tee shots, approaches, and short game so your Par 4s stop killing your score.
Scottie took over professional golf doing this simple things.
Take more club , swing smoother and hit to the widest part of the green.

Remember… any time you take relief - whether that’s free or penalty relief - you’re allowed to change to a different ball!
Stop taking penalty strokes you don’t have to 🛑⛳
Free relief situations most golfers don’t know about:
→ Cart paths & sprinkler heads
→ Temporary water & ground under repair
→ Embedded ball in the fairway or rough
Drop within 1-2 club-lengths. No penalty. Play on.
You’re welcome 😎⛳️
