Known historically as the “Strivers’ Section”—a label once used pejoratively—this Dupont Circle neighborhood emerged as a powerful enclave of Black excellence, home to influential residents whose achievements shaped DC’s cultural and civic life.
This Black History Month, we’re highlighting the architecture and stories that reclaim the narrative.

This building in Central City is probably 150 years old. From what I understand it was a German school house a very long time ago. Someone needs to convert this into condos or office space or something. What a magnificent architectural gem.
Be on the lookout for this great addition to historic Atlanta, the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge. A multi-year preservation and renovation program is finished and the Park Service will soon be opening up this building for tours. I loved getting a preview tour today, and here are a few photos. Standing in the corner of Martin Luther King’s office was a moment - to think of the conversations that took place here, letters written and speeches composed. Here is an overview of what is to come - the SCLC offices, the basement printing press, the WERD radio station offices and event rooms for the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge.Look for the classic fluorescent lights and the Auburn Ave sign just outside the window. Thanks to #phoenixflies for the chance to see a preview of the buildings and to #lordaecksargent for the careful renovation.
Comment “Tour” and I’ll send you the sign up page!
This tour is happening on Sunday March 29th, and I can’t wait. I do hope I will see you there!

Gettysburg’s first permanent Black history museum is on its way to becoming a reality!
The Hopkins House was once the home of Jack and Julia Hopkins, two leaders in the local Black community. We can’t wait to share their stories and more when we open in the fall of 2027!

📖 A piece of history is coming back to life in Smithfield. On North Fourth Street near downtown, restoration of a historic freedmen’s schoolhouse is well underway.
⏳ The story begins in 1869, when the Freedmen’s Bureau, a federal agency, opened the Smithfield schoolhouse for freed Black people. In a letter, Mary Adele Brewer, a teacher there, described the two-room school as 24 feet by 48 feet with 14 windows. Sliding doors, she wrote, separated the two rooms.
🏫 According to the state’s Historic Preservation Office, the Smithfield schoolhouse is the last one standing in North Carolina, and it’s thought to be just one of three remaining in the United States. Take a look inside the restoration project and meet the people preserving this rare piece of history.
We called up @bestaddress to give us a tour of the historic Northumberland Apartments and learn more about what makes DC’s Wardman buildings unique.
What part of DC’s architectural history should we explore next?
Made famous by The Exorcist, these steps often draw tourists to Georgetown—but they once served a far more practical purpose. They were originally built to serve the Capital Traction Company’s car barn, the operational heart of DC’s streetcar system.
The building’s industrial architecture endures today and has been thoughtfully renovated as part of Georgetown University.
Join us on our “Georgetown: Grit to Grandeur” walking tour to see it for yourself—every Sunday at 10 AM starting March 1.

All of Washington, DC, was abuzz when the new Western High School building [now the Duke Ellington School of the Arts] opened in October 1898. Built on the grounds of the former estate of George Earle, Postmaster General under President Grant, the school was overflowing with perks upon perks:
— “the streets of the vicinity are asphalt [which] will drown the din of market wagons rattling over Belgian blocks”
— “there are individual lockers, made of oak [wow!], for all pupils, each containing a shelf, umbrella rack, and dripping pan”
— “a large lunch room in which tempting hot lunches are to be served” [many of the items—bowl of soup, sandwiches, etc— were around 5 cents, or approx. $2 with inflation]
— “there are on every floor convenient washstands, with hot and cold water faucets”
— “a separate laboratory for the generation of hydrogen sulfide, so future pupils are not destined to know the misery of fumes creeping down into the classrooms”
— “gymnasium outfits, cleverly designed by Principal Edith Westcott so as to admit of the utmost ventilation without showing the contents”

I enjoy being able to step inside and actually see the history that I’ve read about! The Siloam School is one of Mecklenburg County’s oldest remaining African American schoolhouses, and one of the community’s last standing Rosenwald-era Schools. While touring the @charlottemuseumofhistory , do yourself a favor and tour the school which sits next to it.
