Christopher Hitchens arguing that Christianity’s greatest failure was cosmology.
For most of its history, Christianity taught a very specific view of the universe:
that Earth was the center of creation and that humans were given exclusive dominion over it.
But modern astronomy revealed something very different.
Earth is just a small planet orbiting an ordinary star, inside the Milky Way, which itself is only one galaxy among hundreds of billions in the observable universe.
From this perspective, Hitchens argues that claiming certainty about the universe’s origins — or claiming to see the “finger of God” in cosmic processes — is an extraordinary assumption, especially given how little we still understand about the cosmos.
Humanity is still in the early stages of studying the universe, observing it from a tiny planet in a vast cosmic system.

Victor J. Stenger was an American physicist, philosopher, and author known for his work in particle physics and his outspoken criticism of religion and supernatural claims. He wrote extensively on science, skepticism, and atheism, with books like God: The Failed Hypothesis and The New Atheism, arguing that the universe can be explained entirely through natural laws without invoking a deity. Stenger also explored topics in cosmology, quantum mechanics, and philosophy of science, promoting a worldview grounded in evidence, reason, and scientific inquiry.

As a child, belief comes easy because it’s given before we’re taught how to question. God feels real because adults say so, and fear fills the gaps where understanding hasn’t grown yet. Growing up doesn’t always strengthen faith, sometimes it exposes how much of it was inherited, not discovered. With age, experiences replace stories, evidence replaces comfort, and questions stop being sinful. For some of us, adulthood doesn’t bring God closer, it makes us realize there was never one to begin with.

What Happens When Science Examines Religion?
Sam Harris argues that beliefs should be open to evidence — all beliefs.
If a claim affects the real world, should it be immune from scrutiny?
🧠 Science doesn’t attack meaning.
It asks for proof.

The gap between "conspiracy" and "mainstream fact" is shrinking fast. We're not theorists - we're just early.
What became validated:
Mass surveillance (Snowden proved it)
Corporate media coordination (now openly discussed)
Lab leak theory (once banned, now plausible)
Wealth consolidation (statistically undeniable)
But here's the catch: Survivorship bias. We remember the conspiracies that came true and forget the hundreds that didn't. For every correct prediction, dozens never materialized.
The exhausting reality: Being right early doesn't feel like victory. It's watching a crash you warned about while everyone dismissed you. Then when it happens, nobody remembers - they just move to the next distraction.
We're living where:
Questioning narratives = "dangerous" even when narratives keep changing
Corporate-government coordination happens openly, nobody cares
Yesterday's "misinformation" = today's fact with zero accountability
The problem: "We were right about everything" lumps legitimate skepticism (surveillance, corruption, media manipulation) with unfounded claims (flat earth, microchip vaccines, satanic cabals).
Not everything dismissed was true. Not everything called "truth-seeking" seeks truth.
What's actually happening: Trust collapsed because institutions broke trust repeatedly. But the vacuum fills with BOTH legitimate research AND complete fabrication.
The wildest theory left: Believing you can sort truth from fiction based solely on whether mainstream confirms/denies it. Reality is more complex than "opposite of what they say."
What conspiracy became fact for you? Real answers. Specific examples. Let's separate signal from noise.

Skepticism had always been more than paranormal claims. As James Alcock puts it, the fight now is bigger: defending science, rationality, and our ability to tell truth from noise.
At CSICon 2026, Alcock will reflect on the history of the modern skeptical movement and where it needs to go next.

Why entertaining religious hypotheticals harms us. It gives supernatural claims too much power, opens doors for belief, and damages intellectual honesty, especially for young minds. There’s a difference between a healthy dose of skepticism and living the paranoid conspiracy life… and that difference is your sanity.
