Beginner tip that can often apply to intermediate surfers too.
I still see a lot of people struggling with the duck dive, which makes it harder for them to surf better conditions, catch more waves, and move faster through the lineup.
Being able to duck dive well is essential to progressing in surfing.

Most beginner surfers don’t realize how much your head affects whether you catch the wave or not.
- While paddling for a wave, keep your back arched and your head up, almost like there’s a soccer ball tucked between your chin and your board.
- The nose of your surfboard should be slightly above the water (around 2 to 5 cm). This helps reduce drag and keeps your paddling smooth.
This is the moment where many surfers hesitate as the wave approaches and starts to lift your board…
- Stay committed and give a few more strong, deep paddle strokes.
Now here’s where your head comes into play…
- When you feel you’re about to match the wave’s speed, bring your head lower and closer to your board.
- This slight shift helps move your weight forward so your board sticks to the face of the wave and starts gliding down.
- The shift is subtle but powerful. Your head and shoulders carry weight. Use it to match the wave’s lift and avoid sliding off the back.
- Once you feel that you’re gliding on the wave, it’s time to pop up.
- Push your hands under your pectorals, arch your back again, and go for a clean, balanced takeoff.
- In early stages of learning, missing waves often come from poor head positioning.
- Too high or too low at the wrong time and the opportunity’s gone.
This one detail will make the difference between catching or missing the wave.

This wave was NO JOKE!
I haven’t realised how big it was until I was about to pop up and when watching the video of course while doing video-analysis😅
I fell few metres after, dropped in someone (but apologised after, really sorry I didn’t see him🫣) and almost run over someone who was in front (and shouldn’t have been there).
The takeaway?
🤙🏼 Commit and go for it, pulling back could be much worse when you’re on the wave already
🤙🏼 Always check carefully if someone has the priority…and if you don’t see this person, always apologise after and do everything you can to get out of the wave
🤙🏼 Never stay in front where people get waves…channel is better and safer
Thanks to my surf coach who is always there and guiding me every time with patience and dedication 😎 @mellow_surfbali

The N1 rule I teach in every lesson before we even touch the water! 🧑🏻🏫
Without mastering this, you can’t surf safely for yourself or others in the water:
❌ DRAGGING BY THE LEASH
Holding the leash lets the board fly freely with the waves. You risk hitting someone else or injuring your hand.
❌ BOARD IN FRONT OF YOU
Placing the board between your body and the incoming wave turns your board into a projectile aimed straight at you.
✅ TAIL PUSH TECHNIQUE
Keep one hand on the tail and one near the center. Push down on the tail to raise the nose over the wave and glide through with full control.
💾 Save this trick for your next session!

A first surf lesson in Bali is more than just standing on a board it’s the feeling of catching your first wave and realizing, I can actually do this.

The secret to catching your best waves isn't just in the water—it starts right here, on the sand. If your take-off feels shaky, it’s time to reset your technique with the Surf Therapy method.
Follow the 4-step sequence:
1️⃣ Cobra Position: Hands close to your ribs, push your chest up.
2️⃣ The Twist: Rotate your hips to the side.
3️⃣ Back Foot: Bring your back foot forward, close to your knee.
4️⃣ Front Foot: Step forward! Keep your back foot at 0° and your front foot at 45° for perfect balance.
As our instructor says, she’s practiced this "100 times at least"! Repetition is the only way to build muscle memory so you can do it in your sleep (or on a 6ft wave).
