800+ years of history and still standing. Tintern Abbey, one of Wales’ most iconic ruins 🖤🏰 by @roseannegarcia0 ##visitheritage #exploreuk #wales #cymru #abbey
Hidden in the woods of Glendalough 🌿 This 12th-century church ruin is one of Ireland’s best kept secrets. Look closely at the Romanesque carvings — faces, animals, ancient symbols 👀 Quiet. Mystical. Timeless. Would you walk the extra kilometre to find it? #glendalough #wicklowmountainsnationalpark #HiddenIreland #irishhistory #medievalireland
Cymer Abbey in Llanelltyd, just North of Dolgellau, in North West Wales was founded in 1198 and is set beautifully beside the River Mawddach. I visited here as I drove back home from a recent trip to North Wales on one of the most beautiful mornings we’ve had so far in 2026. This simple Abbey Church suffered greatly from the conflicts between England and Wales in the 13th century, however there are still plenty of remains to look at and explore. I absolutely love the big arches and when the sun was shining through it was stunning to experience alongside the many birds that were singing, seemingly welcoming this beautiful early spring day. Can you imagine the locals gathering here in the early 1200’s to worship together? The hills, river, birds, sunshine and blue skies would have been there when it was built and seeing it on a day like this felt like a real blessing. How beautiful is Wales. #christory #history #welshchurch #abbey #wales
Tucked away in the Welsh countryside near Cwmyoy lies one of the most unusual churches you’ll ever see… St Martin’s Church. At first glance, it looks like any peaceful rural church, but step a little closer and you’ll notice something isn’t quite right. The walls lean, the floor slopes, and the whole building feels like it’s slowly sliding down the hillside. Often nicknamed the “most crooked church in Britain,” St Martin’s has been battling the landscape for centuries. Built in the 12th century, it sits on unstable ground, and over time landslips have twisted and shifted the structure into what you see today. Inside, it’s even more surreal with tilted pews and an altar that doesn’t quite sit straight. Despite all of that, it’s still standing… and still incredibly peaceful. There’s something about this place that feels frozen in time, like the landscape and history are quietly wrestling with each other. Definitely one of those hidden gems that’s well worth the visit if you’re exploring the Black Mountains. Have you ever seen a church like this before? #CwmyoyChurch #HiddenWales #WelshHistory #ExploreWales #uktravel

The destruction of the settlement by English forces in 1398 left it a ruin but it continued as a church of local importance and a place of pilgrimage…..🥾🌳⛰️🪾🪦! #ruins#glendalough#ireland#adventure#explore

I heard of a wonky church while exploring so had to go check it out and what a magical place it was❤️ St Martin's Church, Cwmyoy is known as 'the most crooked church in Britain' and for good reason! Built on the shifting sub-soil of a massive ancient land-slip, the church walls have slipped and leaned into a variety of crazy angles as the ground below it has continued to settle. The church tower, incredibly still standing, now leans to a greater degree than the leaning tower of Pisa! If you're near Abergavenny, I would recommend a little visit to see it for yourself 😁 #wales #explore #roadtrip #adventure #visit
Over 1,000 years of defying nature 🍀 A quick look into the history of this place and you soon realise how incredible this place is. 📌Fore Abbey County Westmeath stands where nature seems to break its own rules, water flows uphill, trees grow without roots, and monks built an abbey here despite warnings to leave the land alone. First founded in 630 AD by Saint Feichín, and later rebuilt in 1145, legends say that if you take anything from this place, it won’t stay gone. This is Fore Abbey and it’s been defying reality for over 1,300 years #ireland #irish #irelandtravel
The spots where Ireland saved western civilisation 🍀 Hidden in the valley of Glendalough Monastic City, monks once studied and copied manuscripts that preserved knowledge during the early medieval period. Towers like the Glendalough Round Tower were built so they could protect their precious texts during Viking raids. Comment “guide” and I’ll send you my Ireland map guide with 450+ of my favourite places around Ireland that I recommend anyone visiting to see. 🇮🇪 #irish #ireland #irelandtravel
