🥾Step into a creek walker’s boots!
Salmon biologists are often asked… “So, how are the salmon doing?”
Creek walking is one of the ways we find out.
Join Auston Chhor, Raincoast’s Salmon Habitat Biologist, in Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) Territory to monitor the fall salmon runs, the organic fuel that powers the incredible ecological productivity across the coast.
The data collected is used by government and First Nations fisheries managers for stock management and recovery planning.

Salmon are one of the most iconic fish species migrating through #Redwood streams.
These fish spend most of their lives in the ocean, and they return to the streams for spawning from November through February.
While we are getting to the end of the run, there may be a few salmon still running up creeks, so keep your eyes peeled.
What is your favorite fact about #Salmon?
Salmon, they’re golden 🐟✨
For 25 years, King County and regional partners have stuck with the long game — working together to support salmon recovery across our region.
What that commitment adds up to:
• 730 acres of floodplain reconnected
• 719 salmon recovery projects completed
• 1,500 acres planted with native vegetation
The results: healthier salmon habitat, reduced flood risks, and rivers that work better for people, fish, and wildlife.
Some things are worth dancing about 💃

This episode features the heroic story of how First Nations in the Katzie territory restored a creek connected to Pitt River after a landslide blocking the salmon run. They also talk in detail about stages of the life cycle and how crucial it is for salmon to have a safe habitat.

Did you know the Quinsam River Hatchery is responsible for roughly eight million Pink salmon eggs every year? 🐟
The hatchery doesn’t just raise salmon — the team monitors the health of rivers and fish through tagging, sampling, and research, helping protect local salmon populations.
Visitors can explore the self-guided tours along the river, and at the Visitor Centre, learn about the salmon life cycle, restoration projects, and the hatchery’s vital role in the community.
In the fall, it’s also a well-known spot for bear viewing, as black bears often visit the river for their seasonal salmon feast. 🐻

Green Valley was putting on a show today 🌿✨
Two beautiful protected Coho salmon were spawning right in the clear water.
Coho return home, give everything to the next generation, and continue a cycle that’s been unfolding for thousands of years. Watching them today felt grounding, humbling, and perfectly aligned with this time of year.
Nature is busy. So are we. 🍷

In Northern California, a stream ✨glow-up✨ is making a big difference for both fish and people.
Payne’s Creek, a tributary of the Northern Sacramento River, offers high-quality spawning grounds for salmon and steelhead and serves as an important water source for communities and agriculture in the region. But an dysfunctional diversion was preventing salmon and steelhead from migrating upstream.
TU worked alongside the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, the Bend Water Users Association, the Bureau of Land Management, and a team of restoration and fabrication contractors to design and construct a new diversion system that will help reduce fish mortality and improve access to critical spawning habitat for salmon and Central Valley steelhead while balancing water needs in the region.

Dams have destroyed wild salmon populations in California and all over the west coast of America. Chinook salmon are on the brink of a population collapse, leading to salmon season being canceled again in California. The number one reason for this is dams. Dams block native salmon runs from reaching their ancestral spawning grounds that they have used for thousands of years. That’s what makes Dry Creek in Roseville so special. It’s one of the few creeks left in California where wild salmon get to spawn where they were born. That’s why we are finding so many today while surveying at dry creek for its yearly salmon count. Protecting and restoring habitats for endangered Chinook Salmon is the only way to save them from extinction. That is what the Klamath River dam removal project and dry creek have both shown us. This is why California doesn’t need more dams and hatcheries, it needs more chinook salmon spawning in the wild. Save Chinook Salmon before it’s too late.

ROCKS! Every year, our fish biologists pour 800 tons of gravel into Bull Run River to help Chinook salmon, coho salmon, and steelhead trout spawn.
The work is part of our 50-year plan to protect and improve aquatic habitat throughout the Sandy River Basin and lower Bull Run River. Since 2009, we’ve worked with our many partner agencies to complete several major projects to restore habitat for salmon and steelhead.
