Ursula K. LeGuin gave this acceptance speech for her Medal for Distinguished Contribution given by the National Book Foundation back in 2014. This speech was recited 10 years ago, and to me, remains a directive pillar of imagining our collective future.
In the wake of climate disasters, most recently in Asheville NC here in the United States, it is difficult to imagine hope, let alone freedom. LeGuin helps do this for us, through her writing and speech.
LeGuin was a science fiction and fantasy writer who imagined worlds made of hope and alternative lifestyles to capitalism. Her work is as relevant as ever, as our world teeters on the precipice of change.

Ursula K. Le Guin’in “din bilimle çatışmaz” ifadesi, onun derin hümanist ve bütünleştirici dünya görüşünü yansıtır.
Le Guin’in bu görüşünün temel dayanakları şunlardır:
1. Farklı Sorumluluk Alanları: Bilim, “nasıl” sorusuna (doğa yasaları, nedensellik) yanıt ararken; din ve mitoloji, “neden” ve “anlam” sorularına (ahlak, değerler, varoluşun amacı) odaklanır.

There are so many nuggets in this talk by Ursula Le Guin. “We will need writers who can remember freedom”, she says. “Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings”, she says.
Watch the whole clip to enjoy her very wise, prescient words of wisdom. Including what reward a writer should demand.

Ursula K. Le Guin was an influential American writer known for her works of science fiction and fantasy, particularly The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed. Her stories often explored themes of gender, anarchism, environmentalism, and power structures, making her a critical voice in speculative fiction.
Her belief that “any human power can be changed and resisted by human beings” reflects her deep engagement with themes of resistance and societal transformation. She often depicted alternative social structures and questioned hierarchical authority in her works. Le Guin believed that power was not an immutable force but rather something shaped by human choices and actions. This perspective aligns with her broader philosophy that change is always possible through imagination, cooperation, and resistance.
Her stories frequently featured characters who challenge oppressive systems, demonstrating that change begins with individuals and communities willing to reimagine and reshape their world.

Another new (to me anyway) tale that’s become one of my favourite stories ever told. Ged’s many magical adventures will be read time and again over the years to come! Several years after her death, the power and imagination of Ursula Le Guin’s writing appears more relevant than ever. In her collection THE WAVE IN THE MIND, she states, “To think that realistic fiction is by definition superior to imaginative fiction is to think imitation is superior to invention.”
Taking her at her word, we will use Le Guin’s classic science fiction novel The Dispossessed to investigate the power and pitfalls of futurist imaginings. Two antagonistic and isolated worlds collide, presenting a context in which to think through claims of utopia, governance, power, and approaches to those who are different.
In what ways does fiction offer a space for invention? How are threads of political thought and social conflict woven into a narrative? Do the genders of the author and characters impact the speculative horizons of the story? In what ways, if at all, does the construction of alternative worlds make space for asking questions about the human condition that we experience?
“Ursula Le Guin: The Dispossessed“ with Theodra Bane starts online Sunday, May 11th (2:00-5:00pm EST). For more information and to enroll, visit the “Current Courses” link in bio.
