Let's talk power! Whether you win our Rossmönster dream van build or are designing your own adventure van, you want to have enough power for your needs while on the road and off the grid.
If you're a weekend warrior, aim for about 200ah (amp hours). This is enough to run your DC fridge, LED lights, USB chargers, and a Maxxair fan.
If you're planning to be full-time on the road or heading out on week-long trips (or longer), plan on doubling your power to 400ah. It'll run all your basics and give you reserve for those days you're not replenishing your power. More to come on charging back up!
If you're looking to run your air conditioner, cook with induction instead of propane, or not lack power, consider 600ah or more.
To charge your batteries back up, you have 3 main options: solar power, alternator charging, or shore power.
Solar panels on the roof of your van are a great way to keep your batteries topped off but remember, they only work when the sun is shining!
Your alternator charges your van's starting battery when you're driving and can also be used to charge your onboard (aka house) batteries as well. It's a smart idea to add a DC to DC charger during your build, even if you have solar, so you have a backup.
Lastly, shore power is what it is called when you're plugged into an external power source like those found in many campsites and RV parks. You'll need an inverter for this but the pros at Rossmönster can help get you set up with the right one.
