We were having a rough day recently. Both Scott and I were home with the kids for 5 straight weeks over the holidays, trying to work, take care of them, do virtual school, and allllll the other things. On this specific day, everyone was grumpy with each other. I was trying all my normal coping tools: ✨Imagining I'm wearing a yell-proof vest that the yells bounce off of. ✨Making eye contact with them. ✨Getting on their level. ✨Taking a deep breath. ✨Taking a sensory break. But, even in doing all those tools, all of a sudden I felt the yell bubbling up in my body. I decided to pull one last tool out of my parenting toolbox. "BANANA MILKSHAKES!"🙈 I yelled. Everyone stopped. My 5 year old burst into laughter, my 2 year old followed suit. I started laughing too at the chaos and ridiculousness of the morning. I told my 5 year old, tell me something else that sounds funny.... and she and I spent a few minutes just being silly together. It turned everything around. Sometimes in parenting silliness is 🔑. It can turn the moment around and remind us who our kids are: whole people who also struggle, who also yell at times, who also have trouble regulating. In so many ways our kids are like us. In these silly moments we can be reminded that like them, sometimes we need to play and laugh to turn the day around. Have you ever tried this? Let me know with a ❤️ below! Homeschooling/virtual school has been such a good experience for us so far. We dedicate the morning time to live class time and spend the remainder of our days out the house pretty much doing what we want. The kids are happier and I’m less stressed trying to keep up with all the things surrounding traditional school. We’re in our own world these days.
