From Containment to Courage.

This year, The Social Health Foundation was honored to sponsor the first Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage celebration held inside San Quentin Rehabilitation Center.

The event brought together incarcerated residents, staff, community leaders, artists, educators, and supporters to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of AAPI communities while highlighting the power of rehabilitation, healing, and human connection.

At the heart of the celebration was the creation of a 50-foot dragon, symbolizing strength, resilience, transformation, and hope. Built collaboratively by residents and community partners, the project demonstrated how art, culture, and education can bridge divides and create opportunities for growth and belonging.

The Social Health Foundation is proud to invest in initiatives that promote cultural awareness, community engagement, workforce development, and personal transformation. We believe that meaningful rehabilitation happens when people are given opportunities to learn, contribute, and connect with something greater than themselves.

"Be kind. It’s a way we can normalise mental health."

Samoa is seriously underserved when it comes to mental health care, with reportedly just one psychiatrist for more than 225,000 people.

Meet Samoan clinical psychologist Muliagasisila Dr Fa’afetai Fa’aleava, who is urging greater investment and less stigma around mental illness.

He says his culture isn’t something he leaves at the door — it shapes every session, every connection, and every act of care. His message is simple: be kind. You never know what someone is carrying.
